Ali Pew

Senior Style Editor, InStyle

| Williamsburg

When your past month of Instagram posts alone feature beauties like Zella Day, Brit Marling and Sarah Jessica Parker— all of whom you’ve dressed in said social snaps BTW— it’s safe to say, you’re kind of the cat’s meow. Enter Ali Pew, InStyle’s Senior Style Editor and one of those sartorial superstars we blame for the ever-growing stacks of dog-eared magazines decorating our apartments (are we the only ones that feel the day will come when only a Pew-inspired men’s blazer-and-bold floral combo will do?). The savvy editor grew up in Salt Lake City before she moved to Manhattan where she’s contributed to more top titles than most press predecessors twice her age (W, Lucky, Self, and CN Traveler included). At InStyle, Pew dresses leggy ladies in  jaw-dropping, modern editorials, plus she pens stories like her Travel Like An Editor series, a wanderlust trove of ski trips and beach escapes. But, let’s get back to that cat reference for a moment. Clearly, Pew isn’t the only style-inclined soul in her household— her feline friend, Randy is a blue-eyed Ragdoll whose modeled for the likes of Dazed and Confused and United Bamboo. Then, there’s her husband, Oliver Clark, a footwear designer known for his utilitarian staples like lace-up boots. Whether it’s something in their water or, simply, that birds of a feather just flock together, Pew’s posse is one we’ve flagged for life. Here, she sits down with CITIPHILE to reveal her little black book on New York.

NEIGHBORHOOD STANDBY: Lilia (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) is new and so delicious; I love the squash ravioli. We also cook at home frequently because I like to pick up groceries and produce at The Meat Hook (MAP IT, x), and spend the night in.

COFFEE OR TEA: Coffee from Variety (MAP IT, x) because they have a great “grab-and-go” (warning: it’s a bit of a scene).

ALL-TIME FAVORITE RESTAURANT: Narcissa (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x)– I love the salmon and all the vegetable sides. And Barbuto (MAP IT, x) for their bolognese.

GIRLS NIGHT OUT: Bar Pitti (MAP IT, x) tends to be the spot.

WHERE TO BRING OUT-OF-TOWNERS: I like to take people on the ferry from Williamsburg to Dumbo (x). The views of the city are amazing and you get to see all three of the major bridges (Manhattan, Brooklyn and Williamsburg). Plus, Dumbo is always fun for a good dinner (I’m in love with Vinegar Hill House (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) and strolling around.

BEST BRUNCHConcord Hill (MAP IT, x)– it’s just two blocks from our house and it has a great neighborhood feel! I always order scrambled eggs; my husband gets the French toast and we share.

BEST PEOPLE WATCHING: My neighborhood (Williamsburg) is pretty good for this– tourists and hipsters co-existing is always quite the scene!

HEALTHY STAPLE: Sweetgreen (MAP IT, x) for the “Rad Thai” salad (arugula, mesclun, bean sprouts, shredded cabbage, spicy sunflower seeds, carrots, cucumber, basil, citrus shrimp and spicy cashew dressing).

GUILTY PLEASURE: I love Oddfellows ice cream (MAP IT, x), Dough donuts (MAP IT, x) and chocolate chip cookies from Jacque Torres (MAP IT, x).

FIRST THING I MISS WHEN I’M AWAY: My husband. I also miss being able to just walk out the door to do anything I want on short notice.

REGULAR AT: I’d say SoulCycle (MAP IT, x) is probably my most frequent spot. Also, Mesa Coyoacon (MAP IT, x) for tacos because it’s a block from our house and we could eat tacos for every meal.

DATE NIGHT STANDBY: 1 OR 8 (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) for sushi (it’s a really simple menu which we love) and Calexico (MAP IT, x) for Mexican.

DELIVERY GO-TO: Pizza from Roberta’s (MAP IT, x). I love their Margherita style. It was the best day when I found out that we were in the delivery zone.

GO-TO GETAWAY: I love the Pennisula Spa (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x); I always get a deep tissue massage, then go to their relaxation lounge with the big comfy lounge beds… it’s the best.

CLOSET CHECK: Minimal with a twist– I love unique, slightly oversized silhouettes. Sometimes I can go a bit sporty and sometimes a bit classic, but I’m always very minimal and clean. I really only own black, white and navy pieces. My favorite places to shop are The Line (MAP IT, x), Matches (x)– I love their marble-printed packaging and keep it to store things in– and COS (MAP IT, x).

BEST HOME DÉCOR: I am very minimal at home as well and I leave my husband to choose home pieces– he is a little more brave than I am, but we both like modern pieces and mostly neutral colors. I like some texture thrown in the mix and a sort of organic feel with wood and larger pieces. I love Apartment by The Line for housewares, Blu Dot (MAP IT, x), TRNK (MAP IT, x) and BDDW (MAP IT, x). For wood pieces, Organic Modernism (MAP IT, x) is great.

BEST HOST/HOSTESS GIFTS: Mociun (MAP IT, x)– they have the best small ceramics, as well as a great candle selection which I find you can never go wrong with.

GIFTS FOR HIM: My husband likes strange things so I try to find random, funny gifts (sweatshirts with funny slogans, miniature figurines, or anything for our cat, Randy). I usually find the sweatshirts or tees via this bizarre website, The Wireless Catalog.

BEAUTY BLACK BOOK: Clayton Lee (x) at Bumble & Bumble (MAP IT, x) does my color; she has done it for almost 10 years and, somehow, she keeps it in great condition (even through a double process!). Sarajane Lynch (x) at Whittemore House (MAP IT, x) cuts my hair; she knows that I either have it slicked back in a bun or braid, or air-dried and left to the elements, so she makes my cut work for both!

FIT PICK: I try to work out 5-6 days a week, even if some days I can only squeeze in a 30-minute run on the treadmill. I love SoulCycle so I try to go there twice a week; I love Karyn‘s classes (BOOK IT, x).

ULTIMATE NY MOMENT: My first fashion show! It was for Marc Jacobs’ Fall/Winter 2007 collection. My friend at the time (now my husband) worked for Marc Jacobs and got me an extra ticket. I still remember the set– a French parlor with a checkered floor and French doors– it was a time when Fashion Week parties were enormous and extravagant and there was a great after-party. I was in awe the entire night! Now, I attend shows frequently for InStyle, but I’ll never forget that Marc show! CP
