Rebecca Minkoff

| Dumbo

It was 2005, the unofficial height of the “It bag,” and if you were between the ages of 13 and 30, there’s a pretty good chance the “Morning After Bag” was either dangling from your arm or, at the very least, at the top of your wish list. Commonly referred to as the “M.A.B.” by true accessories fiends, Rebecca Minkoff’s infamous carryall catapulted her label to industry fame and paved the way for her to expand into ready-to-wear, footwear and accessories with a similarly girlish, yet urban spirit. Now with a cult-like following of brand devotees— Minkoff has over 190,000 Twitter followers alone— you’d be hard-pressed to find a contemporary designer more Instagrammed, Tweeted or Pinned. Here, she sits down with CITIPHILE to reveal her little black book on NYC.

NEIGHBORHOOD STANDBY: ABC Kitchen (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x). The roasted beet salad with a side of roasted summer squash is to die for!

COFFEE OR TEA: Definitely coffee! I always prefer small, “off-the-beaten-path” type places. Toby’s (MAP IT, x) is right by my office with a hidden bookstore in the back providing much more than your standard coffee shop experience.

ALL-TIME FAVORITE RESTAURANT: Chalk Point Kitchen (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x). They are fairly new and have an amazing space downstairs for private parties. Pretty much everything on their menu is my favorite. Top recommendations: the market heirloom tomatoes with Lioni’s Old Fashioned ricotta and a side of their falafel.

WHERE TO BRING OUT-OF-TOWNERS: Any park in NY is a great go-to! Out-of-towners always appreciate the people watching and the culture. My favorites are Madison Square Park and Cherry Hill in Central Park.

COCKTAIL DE LA NUIT: A margarita! Horchata (MAP IT, x) has a killer jalapeño cucumber margarita. They also have a wide variety of great cocktails in case you aren’t a marg fan.

HEALTHY STAPLE: The Juice Shop (MAP IT, x) for the Mediterranean kale bowl and maybe a smoothie.

GUILTY PLEASURE: Magnum mini ice cream pops!

FAVORITE CUISINE: When I was pregnant with Luca, and yet again with my second, I found myself constantly craving Indian food. Tamarind does it best (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x). On the other hand, for inexpensive and delicious Tikka Masala, I love Panna II in the East Village (MAP IT, x). (You can always spot all the Christmas lights from afar!) Patrons beware, the owners will shout at you from the streets to come inside!

DATE NIGHT STANDBY: Claudette (MAP ITBOOK IT, x). It’s brand new and the interior is just gorgeous!

NY’S BEST-KEPT SECRET: Nomadic Thread Society (x). The Founder/Creative Director, Nicole, has her shop/office in the same building as my old office location on 17th Street. She’s absolutely wonderful and her vintage textiles are one-of-a-kind making every piece that much more special.

REGULAR AT: Mario Badescu is an all-time favorite (MAP IT, x). I venture to a lot of spas around the city, but Mario still gives the best European facial.

KID-FRIENDLY MEAL: My son, Luca, loves the mac n’ cheese and dessert at Max Brenner (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x).

THING I MISS MOST WHEN I’M AWAY: The view from my apartment in Dumbo, looking out onto the Brooklyn Bridge, especially at night time.

BEST HOME DÉCOR: I love to mix things that I find on Ebay with higher end pieces. I would say my style is minimalist while incorporating accent pieces or colors so it’s not too overdone. My mom actually bought one of my favorite pieces at a yard sale. It’s a Danish dining room set and all I had to do was change the fabric on the chairs. I always like to say, filling your house with things that you love is what makes it a home!

BEAUTY BLACK BOOK: Butterfly Salon on 21st Street and 5th Avenue (MAP IT, x) does it all and always makes you feel special.

FIT PICK: My trainer, Kelvin Gary at Body Space Fitness (MAP IT, x) has been my godsend and go-to for the longest time. He always kicks me into shape and even that is an understatement.

ULTIMATE NY MOMENT: My first runway show at Lincoln Center. After all of the hard work, showing my collection in NY was a proud and inspiring moment that I will never forget. CP
