Bibhu Mohapatra

| Upper West Side

With swaths of delicate organza, silk and chiffon draped around his Garment District studio, it’s clear that designer Bibhu Mohapatra has a knack for the dramatic. He’s a true craftsman, both meticulous and studied, with a predilection for beading, pleating and print. Since debuting his eponymous collection in 2008, his high-impact, diaphanous gowns have become a red carpet mainstay, appearing on top Hollywood fashion icons like Gwyneth Paltrow, Olivia Palermo and Lupita N’yongo. Here, Mohapatra sits down with CITIPHILE to reveal his little black book on NYC.

NEIGHBORHOOD STANDBY: Flor de Mayo (MAP IT, x). The herb-roasted Peruvian chicken is the best in the world.

COFFEE OR TEA: Coffee. 2Beans (MAP IT, x) on Park Avenue has the best cup in the city.

WHERE TO BRING OUT-OF-TOWNERS: Indochine (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x). It is a permanent part of New York’s culture and nightlife. You go in and you are instantly taken over by this energy and vibe that has been there for decades.

BEST BRUNCH: Café Luxembourg (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x).

BEST OUTDOOR SPACE: The pool at the James Hotel (MAP IT, x).

COCKTAIL DE LA NUIT: A super dry vodka martini at the Landmarc (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x).

HEALTHY STAPLE: I love a frisée salad with a poached egg. My favorite version is at Café Luxembourg.

GUILTY PLEASURE: Popeye’s extra-spicy fried chicken!

NY’S BEST-KEPT SECRET: It is always evolving.

THING I MISS MOST WHEN I’M AWAY: Its energy. Its palate.

BEST HOME DÉCOR: The many antique shops in Hudson. Modern on the Hudson (MAP IT, x) is a fabulous store filled with mid-century objects and furniture. I’ve found many beautiful things there over the years, but most recently, I found two grey leather and chrome Corbusier sofas for my studio. I love them.

FIT PICK: My trainer Al is all about discipline and good energy. His techniques are unique and he doesn’t require a fancy gym to train in. He can train you anywhere!

ULTIMATE NY MOMENT: The blood drive efforts by locals post-9/11 was so amazing that there was an over-supply of blood. True New Yorkers stand up for each other! CP
