Amy Smilovic

Designer, Tibi

| SoHo

Tibi designer Amy Smilovic may live just outside the city (her family has a home in Greenwich, CT), but her contemporary clothing line is anything but suburban. Take, for example, the fuzzy mohair overcoats, low-slung, pleated culottes and powder blue, furry mules that stomped down her runway for fall: loud-spoken, edgy items that certainly disregard the pearl-and-Pulitzer housewife M.O. In fact, a mother-of-two herself, Smilovic is more likely to rock a crop top and leather pencil skirt to work at her downtown SoHo studio, than she ever would be a Country Club pashmina. All in all, she’s one cool city girl after our own hearts. Here, Smilovic sits down with CITIPHILE to reveal her little black book on NYC.

NEIGHBORHOOD STANDBY: The Waverly Inn (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) for the truffle mac n’ cheese because how can you not love truffles or pasta doused in cheese?

COFFEE OR TEA: Black coffee at Bluestone Lane (MAP IT, x).

WHERE TO BRING OUT-OF-TOWNERS: SoHo. This is where we bought our first apartment, where we opened our first Tibi showroom, and now own our current showroom. I’m a downtowner— there are so many unique furniture stores, boutiques, restaurants and galleries to choose from.

COCKTAIL DE LA NUIT: A dirty martini. I’m not picky. I like to try places based on the night or my mood. There isn’t one spot I stick to; I like variety.

HEALTHY STAPLE: Juice Press (MAP IT, x) for their Mother Earth juice (celery, kale, swiss chard, dandelion, parsley, lemon, ginger, cucumber and proviotic).

GUILTY PLEASURE: French fries from La Frite (*Location now closed) and chocolate cake from Momofuku Milk Bar (MAP IT, x).

NY’S BEST-KEPT SECRET: Does Brooklyn count? Probably not, but this area is such an off-the-beaten-path gem for me. Maison Premiere (MAP IT, x) or Chef’s Table at Brooklyn Fare (MAP IT, x) are both incredible (Chef’s Table has permanently moved to midtown). Be sure to book reservations far in advance!

IDEAL SATURDAY: Breakfast at Balthazar (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x), store shopping in SoHo (you know, for inspiration), window shopping in the antique district, lunch at Freds (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) and the afternoon at the Met (MAP IT, x).

FIRST THING I MISS WHEN I’M AWAY: Food delivery from almost anywhere at anytime.

DATE NIGHT STANDBY: Casa Mono (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x). We’re good friends with the Bastianich’s. Not only is it a great restaurant, but we always like to support them.

KID-FRIENDLY STAPLE: Shake Shack (MAP IT, x).

REGULAR AT: I’m all over the place, but one boutique I stop by regularly is Kirna Zabete (MAP IT, x). I love their clothing and accessories, but if you don’t catch the pieces right away, you’ll miss out.

FAVORITE CUISINE: Italian. Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich do it best of course.

BEST HOME DÉCOR: Area (MAP IT, x) or Canvas (MAP IT, x) for home décor. My style is modern and minimal. I also do quite a bit of shopping on 1stdibs— it’s where I’ve found so many of my unique pieces. One item I love is actually from a Hong Kong flea market: an oversized, antique birdcage that I have in the master bedroom.

BEST HOST/HOSTESS GIFTS: The MoMA gift shop (MAP IT).

BEAUTY BLACK BOOK: Julien Farel (MAP IT, x) for cuts and highlights.

ULTIMATE NY MOMENT: My first Tibi runway show during NYFW! CP
