Karen and Eric Erickson

Designer and Founder, Erickson Beamon

| Chelsea

It’s not everyday that a brand can count both Michelle Obama and Lady Gaga as top clients. Then again, Erickson Beamon isn’t exactly your run-of-the-mill designer either. Founded by husband-and-wife duo Eric and Karen over three decades ago, the luxury brand is best known for their high-glam, crystal statement pieces (though, from FLOTUS-approved pearls to a custom diamante cage mask for the aforementioned pop princess, trust us when we say they have something for everyone). Over the years, they’ve collaborated on runway collections with the best in the business— think Dries Van Noten, Givenchy, Oscar de la Renta and Chanel, and still their namesake line is never short on stunning handmade pieces. This season, designs skew elegant, yet romantic, as in nymph-like halos encrusted with Swarovski crystals and 1920’s tassel necklaces in iridescent beads. They’re the sorts of gems worth treasuring. Here, Karen and Eric sit down with CITIPHILE to reveal their little black books on NYC.

NEIGHBORHOOD STANDBY: K: Blossom (MAP IT, x) is the perfect vegan fine dining experience. It’s an elegant restaurant that even carnivores can enjoy. For everyday take-away, I like Blossom Du Jour (MAP IT, x)— I love a bowl of soup at the end of the day and their tomato lentil fits the bill!

COFFEE OR TEA: K & E: Coffee at La Bergamote (MAP IT, x) because the coffee rocks and the spot-on French pastries are unmatchable.

ALL-TIME FAVORITE RESTAURANT: K: I am a fickle friend, but right now, I love Barchetta (*Location now closed). The arugula and tomato salad sings with flavor and the orata on the grill is a delight, but the hands-down crowd pleaser is dessert! The Crostata del Momento is divine!
E: I’d say Barchetta for me too. I get the home-grown arugula and tomatoes, pompano fish medium-well with a side of potatoes and any mixed drink on the menu or a premium liquor on the rocks.

COCKTAIL DE LA NUIT: K: I’m not much of a drinker. I am really boring. I drink still water, no fizz.
E: A Green Lizard #3 (green chartreuse, ouzo and rum).

MUSIC PICK: K:  I love Joe’s Pub inside the Public Theater (MAP IT, x). We spend every New Years there laughing and crying with my dear friend Sandra Bernhard. In my opinion, her voice is the best in the West.
E:
My favorite kind of music is rock. For live shows, I definitely recommend The Cutting Room (MAP IT, x).

WHERE TO BRING OUT-OF-TOWNERS: K: Any of the art galleries around Chelsea, The High Line (MAP IT) and the Showroom Seven (MAP IT) sample sale (if I do say so myself)!
E: The festivities and parties of New York Fashion Week.

BEST BRUNCH: K: Not to sound like a broken record, but I beg you to try the brunch at Blossom; the Country Scramble is beyond!

BEST PEOPLE WATCHING: K: Every corner and every avenue is an endless sideshow for people watching: New York City is a stage.
E: The Bowery Hotel’s lobby bar (MAP IT, x) during winter solstice and the “dark months.”

HEALTHY STAPLE: K: Organic Avenue (*Location now closed). I love the Medicinal Greens juice— it’s spicy and nutritious.

GUILTY PLEASURE: K: I work in the terminal warehouse and a new pizzeria, BRK (*Location now closed) just opened. It’s a crispy and tasty treat for your palate.
E: Desserts ONLY at Barchetta.

NY’S BEST-KEPT SECRET: K: The Kaballah Centre (MAP IT) has the best Friday night service and dinner, not to mention a true A-list crowd!
E:
Good tipping and being pleasant gets you extraordinary service!

FIRST THING I MISS WHEN I’M AWAY: K: The energy of NYC is my high. The city vibrates at a super sonic speed— I am physically addicted to it. When I’m not in New York, I feel exhausted and drained. The energy feeds me.
E:
The VIBE of the average Manhattanite.

REGULAR AT: K: I am at work all the time. I love my job. When I’m not working, I’m at the The Kaballah Centre. I study, meditate and connect there. Check it out. You’ll love it.

DELIVERY GO-TO: K: As said before, we love Blossom Du Jour. My whole office orders on Taco Tuesdays. Tip: order early because they sell out!

CLOSET CHECK: K: I only wear Showroom Seven designers or Anna Sui (MAP IT). I never like boring. I’d say my style is creative with a touch of rock n’ roll.
E:
My style is a fusion of eclectic and innovative. Our favorite boutique in the city is Curve (MAP IT, x). The buyers are so steady in their vision from season to season— no awkward surprises or dalliances!

BEST HOME DÉCOR: K: I am a mid-century loyalist so our interiors are a statement to mid-century design coupled with an Erickson Beamon chandelier to make everything sparkle!
E:
Clean, sparse and eclectic with an emphasis on heart-felt emotion. We love ABC Carpet & Home (MAP IT, x). We found this amazing handwoven, graphic-style carpet that spills over our entire living room floor there.

BEST HOST/HOSTESS GIFTS: K: We love to give books and to support our friends who publish them (like Stephen Petronio’s Confessions of a Motion Addict and Lucy Liu’s Seventy Two). Invite me for dinner and you will love the book you receive! I also love Art Markit. It’s high art on consumer goods like shower curtains and staplers… Now art can elevate everyone’s daily lives— what a gift to give your hostess!
E: You must look everywhere, but for a fast “fix,” Story on 19th Street and 10th Avenue (MAP IT, x).

BEAUTY BLACK BOOK: K: Glamsquad (BOOK IT, x)! They come to you 24/7 and they are stellar!

ULTIMATE NY MOMENT: E: Years ago, when 48th Street was the mecca for rock n’ roll equipment in NYC, we happened to be in “Manny’s Music” when Paul Stanley of KISS and Jean Beauvoir of The Plasmatics came through the store for an unannounced “Look and Chat.” It was very cool! CP
