Joe Zee

Editor-in-Chief, Yahoo Style

| Chelsea

To say that Joe Zee has a lot going on is an understatement. Now the Editor-in-Chief of Yahoo Style, Zee was first the man behind the elevated creative direction of ELLE. (At the fashion mag for seven years, he is personally responsibly for Lady Gaga’s first-ever US magazine cover, as well as the infamous make-up free Nicki Minaj cover from April ’13). He has hosted and produced two Sundance TV series, made countless cameos on pop culture shows and currently designs his own women’s clothing line, Styled by Joe Zee for QVC. On the editorial side, Zee’s influence at Style can already be seen— from his overarching creative vision to his signature A to Zee style column (a feature he brought over from his ELLE days) making the massive digital magazine one of fashion’s newest power players. Here, Zee sits down with CITIPHILE to reveal his little black book on NYC.

DATE NIGHT STANDBY: We love our neighborhood joints. There is a Japanese restaurant, Asuka (MAP IT, x), just underneath our building that is always our go-to; our waitress, Dora has become such a welcoming face to see every single time.

DELIVERY GO-TO: Waldy’s Pizza (MAP IT, x). We love the classic thin crust there.

TO SEE AND BE SEEN: The Standard Grill (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x).

TO BE ANONYMOUS: Foragers City Grocer (MAP IT, x). It’s just around the corner from my apartment.

CLOSET CHECK: My style is easy, casual, comfortable and simple. I love Odin (MAP IT, x), but I’m also always at Barneys (MAP IT, x).

BEST HOME DÉCOR: My home décor style is classic, modern and simple. Organic Modernism (MAP IT, x) is my favorite home store. For a splurge, I’d be at BDDW (MAP IT, x).

BEST HOST/HOSTESS GIFTS: Barneys. Always.

GROOMING BLACK BOOK: Dr. Dennis Gross (MAP IT, x) does an amazing facial.

FIT PICK: I love hip hop so you can find me at classes at Broadway Dance Center (MAP IT, x), Steps (MAP IT, x) and Equinox (MAP IT, x). My friend, Abby Goldenberg, teaches the best hip hop class at Equinox (sometimes it’s lyrical too)! Check the schedule and definitely try it out!

ULTIMATE NY MOMENT:
When I was filming my television show on the streets of the city, there was a major heat wave and on the hottest day of the year, I was wearing a wool suit. A nearby skateboarder felt so badly for me that he brought me a popsicle… Whatever you think about New Yorkers, it’s moments like these that make me love my city. CP
