Detox Now: Summer Skin by Emilia K.

Tucked Away On The Upper East Side, Manhattan’s Finest Facialist Reveals Her Secret To The Perfect Summer Glow.

Summer brings sunshine which means we are noticeably nicer and more sociable people around this time of year. It also means that between the myriad beach vacations, backyard bbqs and (seemingly endless) back-to-back weddings, our skin tends to take a hit despite our best efforts to look bright-eyed and fresh-faced. On the one hand, we’re dealing with dryness and peeling from sun exposure, and on the other hand, it’s all clogged pores and breakouts from oily SPFs. It’s times like these that we thank the world for the one and only Emilia K.

An aesthetician for over 19 years, Emilia is New York City’s swami of skin— she clears, she softens and she changes lives, or at the very least, complexions. She is responsible for the faces of VIPs like model Carol Alt, designer Mara Hoffman and Princess Charlene and Prince Albert of Monaco (she makes an annual trip just for the royals), not to mention is beloved by CITIPHILE contributors including TeenVOGUE’s Marina Larroude and our Editorial Director, Alexandria Geisler. Just off Central Park, Emilia is headquartered inside the tony Fifth Avenue offices of Dr. Jon Turk, an eminent plastic surgeon, where she’s become somewhat infamous for her peels, facials and depigmenting masks. To treat summer skin in particular, she stands behind the Edge HydraFacial, a semi-rare facial and the only one to integrate exfoliation, extraction, cleansing and hydration all in one. “The Edge HydraFacial is the perfect summer facial because it restores youthful, healthy skin. I use hydropeel tips which create a unique vortex effect to easily dislodge and remove impurities while simultaneously hydrating the skin with potent antioxidants,” she says.

The HydraFacial relies on a machine that coats the skin in a water-based serum infused with antioxidants, peptides and hyaluronic acid to prevent and reverse skin damage, combat dryness, clear pores and improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and acne— essentially, it’s your beauty BFF. When we heard that Emilia was one of the only aestheticians in Manhattan to offer the service, we booked an appointment to try it out ourselves immediately. Scroll down to see our before, during and after treatment photos.  Just sayin’— you know you’ve found something special when incessant stroking of your face leads to close friends and family inquiring about your current state of sobriety; our skin has never felt softer or more cleansed.

Before the HydraFacial

Before: Pre-HyrdaFacial, fine lines on the forehead and circles under the eyes.

The 2-hour procedure begins with a Biopelle cleanser and facial dermaplaning to remove dry, dead skin from the surface.

The unique HydraFacial machine coats and hydrates the face in the antioxidant-enriched serum.

Emilia works her way around the face to unclog and clear pores around the forehead, nose, cheeks and chin for the extraction portion of the facial.

A Decleor balm is used to massage and soften the face.

A skin mask is chosen based on the client’s individual complexion and applied.

To finish, a Biopelle ampoule and Elta MD SPF are applied to the skin.

After: a Biopelle ampoule and Elta MD SPF brighten and shine.

“I choose to use the Biopelle ampoule to complete my treatments, as well as recommend it for use at home because of its unique growth factor for skin rejuvenation,” says Emilia. “It’s just great for post-laser procedures, sun damage, prescription retinoids and overall skin repair.” She recommends clients drop in for a HydraFacial every 4 to 6 weeks, especially in the summer, for ultimate skin health, though if she can give only one piece of beauty advice, it’s to “always wash you face in the evening with an appropriate cleanser! As tired and lazy as we sometimes feel, never forget to do it. Also, never leave home without SPF in the morning. I cannot live without Elta MD UV Clear,” she says. We guess our moms were onto something all these years…
