Djuna Bel

| Highland Park

Cascading blonde locks, vintage clothes and a magnetic energy, Djuna Bel is a modern-day femme fatale with a whisper of ‘70s nostalgia and a coolness of now. She’s the kind of captivating beauty you could easily imagine running alongside Ali MacGraw in Goodbye, Columbus, and yet, as an accomplished fashion model-slash-stylist-slash-renegade, she’s this generation’s definition of a total dynamo. Who better than Bel then to kick off our West Coast debut? On the styling front, she’s outfitted stars as far-reaching as Suki Waterhouse and Karen Elson to Jaden Smith and Adam Levine; her work immortalized in glossies like ELLE. i-D, W and Paper. She’s worked alongside Guy Aroch and Kenneth Cappello, and styled for the likes of Birkenstocks, Volkswagen and Wrangler Jeans (there’s that ‘70s twang). At home on the East side, Bel shares her space with longtime boyfriend and famed artist-slash-carpenter Nikolai Haas (clearly the abode has creativity in spades). Between the home’s custom-designed sunken living room and its pizza oven-bedecked patio, its inimitably Bel’s side of paradise. Here, she sits down with CITIPHILE to reveal her little black book on LA.

NEIGHBORHOOD STANDBY: Speranza (MAP IT, x)— I love the crab legs.

COFFEE OR TEA: Civil Coffee (MAP IT, x)— it’s close by and cozy, but I also like my morning routine with my tea and sun potion tinctures at home.

ALL-TIME FAVORITE RESTAURANT: Sushi Park (MAP IT, x); everything is amazing!

COCKTAIL DE LA NUIT: A martini at The Raymond in South Pasadena (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x)— it’s my secret spot. Ask for the Australian bartender; he makes the best martini I have ever had.

AFTER-WORK HAPPY HOUR: L & E Oyster Bar in Silver Lake (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x).

MUSIC PICK: All kinds of music. Rock n’ roll? Disco? I like going to Tenants of the Trees (MAP IT, x) when my friends are deejaying there. I also love watching Marty and Elayne at The Dresden (MAP IT, x).

BEST BRUNCH: Kitchen Mouse (MAP IT, x)— the best brunches and best vibe. I always run into buddies and the food is so healthy and amazing.

BEST PEOPLE WATCHING: The Rose Bowl Flea Market (MAP IT, x).

HEALTHY STAPLE: Amara Kitchen (MAP IT, x) for the “Come Together” purple eggs (pasture-raised poached egg on black rice with purple slaw and “boss” sauce).

GUILTY PLEASURE: Molé pizza from Town Pizza (MAP IT, x).

LA’S BEST-KEPT SECRET: The Angeles Forest— it’s so gorgeous!

REGULAR AT: Wi Spa (MAP IT, x) for a Korean scrub and massage after every trip and Kitchen Mouse every Sunday after a hike (if I have the day off).

DATE NIGHT STANDBY: Taverna Tony in Malibu (MAP IT, x). A trip to the beach always feels like a destination since LA is so expansive.

DELIVERY GO-TO: Ramen from Shin Sen Gumi (MAP ITx).

TO SEE AND BE SEEN: Erewhon (MAP IT, x), ha!

TO ESCAPE AND UNWIND: Wi Spa or a hike in the Angeles Forest.

CLOSET CHECK: [My personal style/aesthetic is] a ’70s tomboy who rarely wears pants. I wear a lot of vintage— Painted Bird (MAP IT, x) and Worship LA (MAP IT, x) are my favorites for vintage scores.

ACCESSORIES PICK: Broken English (MAP ITx) has the best jewelry in the city. Also, I’m a sucker for Saint Laurent boots.

BEST HOME DÉCOR: I live in a tree house in Highland Park and I’m lucky enough to be engaged to a designer, Nikolai Haas so our place is pretty eclectic. I would call it a mid-century psychedelic cabin. We have a lot of Haas Brothers pieces, Jeff Zimmerman lighting and, hopefully, some Wendell Castle pieces soon.

BEST HOST/HOSTESS GIFTS: Silverlake Wine (MAP IT, x) and Cactus Store in Echo Park (MAP IT, x).

BEAUTY BLACK BOOK: My laser facialist, Erica Zodtner at Skin Style (MAP IT, x), and my hair colorist, Jay Diola (x) at Goodform (MAP IT, x).

FIT PICK: I hike a lot with my friend Langley and her puppy, Zep. I was really on a roll for a moment at the LA Athletic Club (MAP IT, x) which is definitely the best looking gym in the city, but it was a bit of a trek. My only real routine is my Sunday hike with my boyfriend and my buddy, Vincent.

ULTIMATE LA MOMENT: When I realized Crispin Glover was working out next to me at the gym. CP
