Early morning, when the streets are barely abuzz, an old-timey diner in Chinatown proves the perfect place to settle in with a freshly brewed cup before starting the day. As it turns out, of course, the Art Deco-inspired Nickel & Diner isn’t “old” at all; but rather, it’s the new all-day staple of a neighborhood that needed it most. Its grab-n-go, letter board-bedecked coffee counter gives way to intimate teal banquettes and a long, inviting bar where Chef James Friedberg serves up seasonal bites from kale cashew bowls in the morning to macadamia nut cod and chestnut pappardelle at night— diner-meets-farm perfection. On the corner of Tompkins and Monroe, inside a tiny jewel box of a space, lies some of the season’s most special treasures. Known as Sincerely, Tommy, the Bed-Stuy boutique keeps a somewhat quiet, albeit loyal local following (those who know are hesitant to share) for its rare and original designs. Emerging women’s wear brands like Nu Swim and Beaufille hang above silver bowls, matisse-like jewelry and one-of-a-kind ceramics, all of which are waiting for a discerning home. (MAP IT)

After a long day in the city, there are few places as charming to unwind as All Hands. Tucked up under the Williamsburg Bridge, it’s here that sweeping views of Manhattan mingle with tea lights and locally-sourced fare as a host of neighbors pass on through. The kitchen, helmed by Chef Pete Lipson (formerly of the late, great Northern Spy Food Co.), champions nearby fisheries, farmers and artisans, churning out plates like albacore pastrami, mussels on toast and olive oil poached salmon. If you’re lucky enough to snag the cozy corner booth, its an ideal place to linger as dusk turns into night. (MAP IT)
