Inez & Vinoodh

| Nolita

It’s true, many fashion photographers have colored the pages of Vogue and landed major ad campaigns (à la Givenchy and Balmain), but just how many have shot an album cover for Bjork, directed a music video (“Applause”) for Lady Gaga and digitally grafted adult male mouths onto the faces of children— a dramatic series meant to bring awareness to child sexuality— too? Granted, Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, “Inez & Vinoodh” are no ordinary photo duo. Originally students of fashion design, the Dutch pair met in Amsterdam when Inez was commissioned to photograph a collection for Lawina, Vinoodh’s then-clothing line, and the rest is (well-documented photo) history. After over 25 years together, the couple have become notorious for their sweeping range of work— from their high-glamour editorials for Harper’s Bazaar and Vanity Fair to their boundary-pushing conceptual tableaus for Purple Magazine, Interview and personal shows. But, whether it be a partially-bionic Lady Gaga or a series of nudes with orifices removed (a comment on elegance and horror), one thing pervades: their work makes you think, feel and respond; it’s static art that is anything but. Here, the visionary couple sits down with CITIPHILE to reveal their little black book on NYC.
