Javas Lehn

Founder, Javas Lehn Studio

| SoHo

Affixed to Javas Lehn’s living room wall is a black-and-white photo of an inner tube-clad man floating alongside a sea of similarly accessorized cronies—the Seattle man’s annual inner tube convention realized at last. As it happens, the visionary in question was Lehn’s grandfather— it seems creativity indeed runs in the family. And gumption too— as Creative Director of his downtown design firm Javas Lehn Studio, Javas’ 9-to-5 spans art direction, advertising, packaging, branding and editorial, e-commerce and book design for clients as diverse as The MoMA and Tory Burch. His talented team is behind surf shop (and excellent coffee purveyor) Saturdays’ cooly-curated magazine and Lollipop, the 228-pt mag highlighting Formula 1’s 2014 season, not to mention the punchy ads (read upright baguette) we’ve grown to expect from Chelsea’s Hotel Americano or Ace of Faith, artist Brian Paumier’s vibrant portraiture book. In any medium though— whether it be print, digital or signage— Lehn’s work bares a convivial esprit and tongue-in-cheek humor that you can’t help but gravitate towards. The ingenious apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, eh? Here, Lehn sits down with CITIPHILE to reveal his little black book on NYC.

ULTIMATE NY MOMENT: Being able to surf, work, bump into someone you haven’t seen in years on the street, have dinner with friends and end up in a secret location for a boxing match all within one day. This city is magical. CP
