Jessica de Ruiter

Stylist

| Silver Lake

OK sure, nobody’s “perfect,” but you know who comes up pretty damn close? We’re talking about Silver Lake lady Jessica de Ruiter. The statuesque, blonde beauty broke into the style scene as a fashion editor, roaming the storied halls of Vogue, Teen Vogue, W and WWD, before becoming the brilliant stylist she is today. Hollywood’s brightest— everyone from J Law to Goldie Hawn— have been privy to the “de Ruiter treatment” (usually luxe layers and dreamy classics); plus there’s the mountains of editorial work she’s styled for glossies like Harper’s Bazaar, Vanity Fair and ELLE (mostly done in collaboration with major photogs like fellow CITIPHILE Pamela Hanson). Sound easy? Perfect? We haven’t even gotten to her extracurriculars yet: wife of interior designer, Jed Lind; mom to daughter, James; best gal pal to Jenni Kayne; and as much a regular at her local farmer’s market as she is the homes of said Hollywood starlets– now, how’s that for a 2016 SuperWoman? Yes, Jessica de Ruiter is perfect and though she’d never admit it (too humble (of course)), we’ll be forever inspired by her. Here, she sits down with CITIPHILE to reveal her little black book on LA.

NEIGHBORHOOD STANDBY: Sqirl (MAP IT, x). I usually get the “Stella Bowl” (Kokuko Rose brown rice, kale, nut-free sorrel pesto, preserved Meyer lemon, lacto-fermented hot sauce and radish) and a turmeric tonic. The line is always out the door at this renowned spot.

COFFEE OR TEA: Both. I make my coffee at home– I blend organic coffee with coconut oil, ghee and cinnamon every morning. Malibu Farm Café (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) makes a good Bulletproof coffee [too]. I am also really into Tulsi and Gynostemma teas thanks to the amazing integrative nutritionist, Elissa Goodman (MAP IT, x) (check out her cleanses).

ALL-TIME FAVORITE RESTAURANT: Axe in Venice was my all-time favorite, but it recently closed. Gjelina (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) is now my fav.

COCKTAIL DE LA NUIT: Casa Drogones Tequila at one of jewelry designer, Irene Neuwirth’s famed dinner parties.

JUICE PICK: Beverly Hills Juice Club (MAP ITx) for the “Green Genie” (Celery, parsley, spinach, kale, romaine, apple, ginger and lemon) or their legendary “Banana Mana Shake.” It’s the original LA juice bar (it opened in 1975) and is still the best, hands-down.

LADIES LUNCH: Cecconi’s (MAP IT, x) or Fred’s (MAP IT, x) for lunch; dinner at Chi Spacca (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x).

GIRLS NIGHT OUT: Café Stella (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x)– it’s sexy and fun, plus Bar Stella is next door.

MUSIC PICK: Hollywood Bowl (MAP IT, x) for outdoor concerts and live music; Jon & Vinny’s (MAP IT, x) and Trois Mec (MAP IT, x) for the best playlists ever.

BEST BRUNCH: Hollywood Farmer’s Market (MAP IT, x) every Sunday morning for almost 15 years. I shop for the week ahead and have breakfast with good friends. Arrive early.

BEST PEOPLE WATCHING: Joan’s On Third (MAP IT, x).

HEALTHY STAPLE: Inaka (*Location now closed). They serve incredible, clean, macrobiotic Japanese food in a simple peaceful setting. I also like the kale salad at Croft Alley (MAP IT, x).

GUILTY PLEASURE: Chocolate caramel cake from Sweet Laurel Bakery (x) or Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams in Los Feliz (MAP IT, x).

LA’S BEST-KEPT SECRET: At 11 am, traffic is the lightest it will be no matter where you are or plan to go.

FIRST THING I MISS WHEN I’M AWAY: The magical, golden light and the sweet smell of sage.

REGULAR AT: Cookbook (MAP IT, x) is my favorite market. It is stocked with artisanal pantry essentials, local produce, sustainable fish/meat and fresh bread. The offerings change weekly to reflect the season.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY GO-TO: Speranza (MAP IT, x) for early Sunday night family dinners with friends. It’s simple, light Italian food with house-made pasta and a fun, easy-going setting that accommodates kids.

TO SEE AND BE SEEN: Erewhon (MAP IT, x).

TO ESCAPE AND UNWIND: A weekday hike in Griffith Park (MAP IT, x) or a massage at home with Oleg of OM Massage (MAP IT, x).

CLOSET CHECK: My style could best be described as uniform dressing. Melrose Place where one can walk on a tree-lined street is a great shopping destination: The Row (MAP IT, x), Isabel Marant (MAP IT, x), The Line (MAP IT, x), Chloé (MAP IT, x), A.P.C. (MAP IT, x), Violet Grey (MAP IT, x) and Bonton (MAP IT, x). Mohawk General Store in Silver Lake (MAP IT, x) has a beautiful and thoughtful curated selection of clothing and accessories.

ACCESSORIES PICK: Barneys(MAP IT, x) shoe department.

BEST HOME DÉCOR: My interior style is true and timeless; I like cozy, considered, clean. Galerie Half (MAP IT, x), Lief (MAP IT, x) and Garde (MAP IT, x) are my favorite interiors stores and a constant source of inspiration.

BEST HOST/HOSTESS GIFTS: Silver Lake Cheese Store (MAP IT, x).

FOR THE KIDS: Sweet William (MAP IT, x).

BEAUTY BLACK BOOK: Alex Polillo (x), owner of Mare Salon (MAP IT, x), cuts my hair and Mikael Padilla does my color.

FIT PICK: I walk or run the trail around the Silver Lake reservoir every morning– rain or shine. I can’t start my day without getting outside to exercise. It’s energizing, strengthening and meditative all in one.

ULTIMATE LA MOMENT: Driving the PCH at magic hour when the sun is just setting, windows are rolled down and the smell of the salty ocean air fills my car. Somehow this never gets old. CP
