Kirsten Kjaer Weis

Makeup Artist & Founder, Kjaer Weis

Coated in a spectrum of pinks and accented with delicate line drawings, Kirsten Kjaer Weis’ home is a thing of beauty. “They say the building is actually the first diamond dealers building in New York City,” she tells us, seemingly unaware of just how fitting that is for her, a woman who is well on her way to becoming the crown jewel of beauty, herself. Danish by birth, Weis began her skincare career in Copenhagen, before moving to Paris for Ivy-League-level beauty training, then back to Copenhagen, and later, New York (clearly, the whole “globe-trotting-makeup-artist” bug was in her blood). After spending decades on set for glossies like ELLE, Vogue and Marie Claire (plus, music videos and ad jobs), Weis was seeing the same problem, over and over again: models plagued by skin issues from toxic cosmetic products, and her idea for an organic, albeit effective makeup line was born. Fast forward several years and Weis’ revolutionary, natural-can-be-luxe label hasn’t just taken the former stigma out of green beauty, but it’s made the concept implausibly chic. All of Weis’ products are made in Italy with natural ingredients like shea butter and rose hip oil, and encased in refillable metal packaging designed by award-winning designer Marc Atlan (he’s the guy behind the sculpted perfume bottles of Helmut Lang and Comme des Garçons). In fact, her “refill” products even cost less because you simply pop them into their previously purchased frames. Still, want to know the best part? Weis’ products don’t only perform, they shine (literally). Good for your body, good for the world, good on your face— yeah, we’re not sure why we’d ever choose to wear anything else. Here, Weis sits down with CITIPHILE to reveal her little black book on NYC.

NEIGHBORHOOD STANDBY: Augustine (MAP IT, BOOK ITx)— the food, ambiance and service are all so great. I love how they’ve restored the whole hotel and I’m so happy to have them in the neighborhood. If I’m ever craving a burger, this is where I go.

COFFEE OR TEA: Coffee! The best cup in the city is at Stumptown at The Ace Hotel (MAP ITx) because it’s perfectly smooth, just how I like it.

ALL-TIME FAVORITE RESTAURANT: Via Carota (MAP IT, x). I absolutely love their piselli salad (a mix of lettuce, peas, prosciutto and robiola cheese)— it’s the freshest and most exquisite salad and I could eat it every day. Jodi Williams is an absolute genius.

COCKTAIL DE LA NUIT: I don’t drink cocktails very often, but when I do, I love an Old Maid (vodka, mint and cucumber). It’s not the chicest name for a drink, but it is delicious! My favorite one is at Freeman’s (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x).

AFTER-WORK HAPPY HOUR: I like to go to Buvette on Grove Street (MAP IT, x) or the lounge at The Beekman (MAP IT, x).

LADIES WHO LUNCH: The Mercer Kitchen (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x). I highly suggest the raw tuna pizza; it’s amazing.

WHERE TO BRING OUT-OF-TOWNERS: I would bring them to the top of Rockefeller Center (MAP IT, x) at dusk so they can experience it while it’s still light, as well as watch the evening lights come on. I’ve been up there many times and it still blows my mind.

MUSIC PICK: I love laid-back jazz music like Madeleine Peyroux, but I also like old-school rock like Hall & Oates.

BEST BRUNCH: The Butcher’s Daughter (MAP IT, x) is delicious. It’s always so fresh and healthy.

BEST PEOPLE WATCHING: Sitting outside of Café Gitane on Mott Street (MAP IT, x)— always an interesting window into New York City.

HEALTHY STAPLE: I love Dig Inn (MAP IT, x), especially in the wintertime. They have great, green sides like roasted broccoli and kale.

GUILTY PLEASURE: Sushi is definitely my guilty pleasure. I often go to Takahachi on Duane Street (MAP IT, x). I love their salads and they have rolls to die for.

NY’S BEST-KEPT SECRET: The Flower District (x) is one of my absolute favorite places to go, especially at 7 am. It’s so beautiful up there; so fresh and happy. It’s the most invigorating and inspiring way to start the way.

FIRST THING I MISS WHEN I’M AWAY: The amazing KW team. They are literally the most engaged, fun and brilliant team one could ask for.

REGULAR AT: McNally Jackson Books on Prince Street (MAP IT, x). I love sitting there with a cup of coffee and getting inspired by the magazines and people. I’ll go once or twice a month.

DATE NIGHT STANDBY: Tiny’s & The Bar Upstairs (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x). It’s the perfect date night spot; it’s super cozy and has a fireplace in the back (not to mention, the food is delicious).

TO SEE AND BE SEEN: The Guggenheim (MAP IT, x) is the perfect place for that.

TO RELAX AND UNWIND: Being in the Financial District, you are so close to the waterfront on both sides of Manhattan which I love. Walking around lower Manhattan with the wind in your hair and looking over at the Statue of Liberty never gets old.

QUOTIDIAN KEEPER: Ann Nails (MAP IT, x) is my local, go-to nail salon. It’s no-frills; just a great manicure.

GO-TO GETAWAY: For me, going home to Denmark is always a little getaway. The whole atmosphere is much calmer overall. I go there several times a year for business, but also to relax and to visit family and friends. Copenhagen as a city is a gem. It’s small, but it has a lot to offer and there’s also a great restaurant scene. One of my favorites is Fiskebaren (The Fish Bar) in the Meatpacking District (MAP IT, x). It has a huge bar where you can sit and sip white wine with the most delicious home-made fish and chips. Everything is home-made, even down to the dipping sauce (which we call remoulade).

CLOSET CHECK: I always go back to a men’s jacket, a feminine blouse, a perfect pair of jeans and a pair of stilettos. No. 6 in SoHo (MAP IT, x) is one of my favorite stores in New York. They always have an inspiring and beautiful mix of hand picked vintage and under-the-radar designers that you can’t find anywhere else.

Every woman needs a Kjaer Weis cream blush (and an eyelash curler) in her makeup bag.

SUMMER BEAUTY LOOK: Minimal foundation, cream blush on the apples of the cheeks and a lip tint.

CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT: Our facial oil, Beautiful Oil, is an absolute must for me every day. I definitely can’t live without May Lindstrom’s The Good Stuff body oil and my Shu Uemura eyelash curler either.

BEAUTY IS: Deep beauty. By that, as much of a cliché as it might sound, real beauty truly radiates from the inside. Beauty is kindness.

BEST HOME DÉCOR: Home décor is highly important to me. If I wasn’t doing what I’m doing, I would definitely be involved in interior design. I lean towards vintage pieces— anywhere from old French to mid-century Danish. I love to mix different styles, textures and color combinations. I feel that in surroundings that are soothing and pleasing to my eye, inspiration runs freely. I bring back a lot of pieces from Denmark. For fabrics, I go up to the Garment District and spend afternoons digging through [their inventory]. I’ve found some great pieces at vintage furniture stores in Brooklyn as well.

BEST HOST/HOSTESS GIFTS: I like creating unique bouquets, making it super personal. I also go to Dean & DeLuca (MAP IT, x) for truffle salt which always makes a great gift.

FOR HIM: For my boyfriend, I always try to get good concert tickets. We’re old-school—Steely Dan is our favorite whenever they’re in town. Otherwise, I would find a great book at McNally.

BEAUTY BLACK BOOK: Gilah Gurovitsch (x) is my absolute favorite facialist hidden in Staten Island (MAP IT, x)— so worth the trip!

FIT PICK: One of my go-to workouts is rebounding (MAP IT, x) which is fantastic for cardio and for the lymph system. I’m also a huge fan of Tracy Anderson videos. In the wintertime, I like to mix it up with some Bikram yoga.

ULTIMATE NY MOMENT: I feel like it’s so unique to this city to have this term “a New York moment” and I absolutely love collecting them. One that stands out to me the most has to be meeting Woody Allen. Growing up in Denmark, I think I speak for a lot of Danes when I say that their first fascination of New York happens through Woody Allen movies (which are all so captivating). I had the pleasure of meeting him at a party once and that was definitely a true New York moment for me. CP
