Lauren Soloff

Interior Designer

| West Adams/Jefferson Park

“My home is Californian casual,” Lauren Soloff explains as we walk around the 1920s Spanish-style home she shares with her son, Roman. “I like interior spaces to feel easy and comfortable.” It’s almost comical, then, that the interior designer’s laid-back demeanor leaves whomever crosses her path feeling just the same— with a smile that seems to radiate actual warmth and a spirit that calms (if not comforts), it’s nearly impossible to believe that Soloff isn’t a SoCal native at all, but a New Yorker, born-and-bred. She decided to move West after studying art history at Columbia University, and romanced by California’s relaxed, bohemian nature, she’s been a La La Land resident ever since. Now, Soloff is known for turning city-wide bungalows into picturesque oases— think minimalist rooms of organic linen, terra-cotta pots and the occasional Southwestern print— which have (naturally) caught the eye of gal pals and fellow CP alum Clare Vivier and Jenni Kayne among others. Indeed, it takes only a quick scroll through her Instagram feed before her stunning ‘scapes have you craving a piece of her California dream, too. As if we had to say it, clearly she’s right where she belongs. Here, Soloff sits down with CITIPHILE to reveal her little black book on LA.

NEIGHBORHOOD STANDBY: My neighborhood is still “blooming” so for something nearby, we often head to Koreatown. We love Cho Sun Galbee (MAP IT, x) for Korean BBQ.

COFFEE OR TEA: An almond milk cappuccino from Go Get ‘Em Tiger (MAP IT, x). They know what they are doing and they know my order by heart.

ALL-TIME FAVORITE RESTAURANT: I always love Tower Bar (MAP IT, x)– it just feels so perfectly LA. The “Tower burger” with fries is my go-to…

COCKTAIL DE LA NUIT: A celery margarita from Republique (MAP IT, BOOK ITx). For anything wine-related, call Helen at Helen’s Wines (MAP IT, x).

OC (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) or Lucques (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x).

LADIES LUNCH: Sqirl (MAP IT, x)… but go early!

WHERE TO BRING OUT-OF-TOWNERS: The Hollywood Farmer’s Market (MAP IT, x) on Sundays, LACMA (MAP IT, x) and the trails at Griffith Park (MAP IT, x).

HEALTHY STAPLE: Ammo (MAP IT, x) for the “Alexander Brown” rice bowl (Brown rice with broccoli, green beans, kale and pico de gallo).

GUILTY PLEASURE: French fries from
Marvin (MAP IT, x), Hungry Cat (MAP IT, x) or Café Stella (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x).

LA’S BEST-KEPT SECRET: The metro line.

DATE NIGHT STANDBY: Inaka (*Location now closed)— it is very peaceful which allows for focused conversations.

KID-FRIENDLY STAPLE: Terroni (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) is always our pick; it has a great atmosphere and the kids love it.

GO-TO GETAWAY: Inverness is our favorite; we love staying at Manka’s (MAP IT, x). There is a gem of a restaurant there called Saltwater Oyster Depot (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x).

CLOSET CHECK: Melrose Place is really good [for shopping] these days: The Row (MAP IT, x) is always inspiring, Isabel Marant (MAP IT, x) is great, and Equipment (MAP IT) is nice for every day pieces. Also, I recently discovered Violet Grey (MAP IT, x) for beauty products.

BEST HOME DÉCOR: My home is, “Californian casual.” I like interior spaces to feel easy and comfortable. In terms of shopping, it’s always exciting when you can score something amazing at The Rose Bowl in Pasadena (MAP IT, x), but Garde (MAP IT, x), Nickey Kehoe (MAP IT, x) and Heath Ceramics (MAP IT, x) are all good too.

BEAUTY BLACK BOOK: Colorist Christopher Pierce (x) at Andy LeCompte salon (MAP IT, x)— he’s the absolute best.

FIT PICK: I am a loyal Tracy Anderson (MAP IT, x) fan.

ULTIMATE LA MOMENT: Every day in LA is a “moment!” CP
