Luma Grothe

Model

| Long Island City

Current face of beauty juggernaut, L’Oréal, Luma Grothe surprisingly didn’t win her first modeling competition— a rather ludicrous ruling considering the model’s subsequent rapid rise to fame. An alluring mix of German, Japanese and African ethnicities— she’s often thought of as a Miranda Kerr-Angelina Jolie hybrid— Grothe grew up in Brazil where her naturally striking looks and compelling bubbliness stood out from the crowd. By age 16, she signed with fellow CITIPHILE Scott Lipps’ One Model Management and since, she’s collected quite the resume. At only 22, Grothe is fluent in the proverbial arts of print and runway, having walked for brands like Burberry Prorsum, Jeremy Scott and Versace and posing for spreads in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and ELLE. She regularly works alongside the industry’s elite— from photographer Mario Testino to fellow model and CITIPHILE Hailey Clauson— and all the while, manages to make time for prosciutto-filled burrata and her adorable French bulldog, Bark Obama (there’s Grothe’s inimitable sense of humor for you). Here, the Brazilian beauty sits down with CITIPHILE to reveal her little black book on NYC.

NEIGHBORHOOD STANDBY: I go to a lot of restaurants in my area actually. A good spot for a meal is Maiella by chef Rocco Sacramone (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x). They have the best Italian food— get the burrata filled with prosciutto followed by the meat ravioli! Whenever I go, I feel like I’m in the south of Italy.

COFFEE OR TEA: Tea! I usually get something from David’s Tea (MAP IT, x); they have a million different flavors!

ALL-TIME FAVORITE RESTAURANT: I think my all-time favorite restaurant is Mighty Quinn’s in the East Village (MAP IT, x)! It’s just such an easy and fun place to be with friends. I always order the brisket.

COCKTAIL DE LA NUIT: Sangria from Surf Bar in Brooklyn (MAP IT, x). The bartenders all look like Californian surfer guys— not a bad place to be!

GIRLS NIGHT OUT: Surf Bar is usually where I take my girls for a night out. They have good music and cool people.

MUSIC PICK: I listen to a lot of hip hop. I’ve seen Drake, Future, 2chainz, Kendrick Lamar, etc. live at the Barclays Center (MAP IT, x); the shows there are worth checking out!

BEST BRUNCH: Blend on the Water (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x). They have a very good view of Manhattan and amazing Latin food!

BEST PEOPLE WATCHING: Washington Square Park in the summer.

HEALTHY STAPLE: Favela Cubana downtown (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x)! I always go after my workout and order the salmon— it’s the best in town.

GUILTY PLEASURE: Max Brenner‘s chocolate fondue (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x)!

FIRST THING I MISS WHEN I’M AWAY: The people and the energy. Everybody has a good story to tell and big dreams to pursue! I love to see that.

DELIVERY GO-TO: When I come home from long trips, I order sushi from Shi (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x). Okay, maybe I order it a bit more often than just when I come home from traveling… I’m a homebody!

GO-TO GETAWAY: My favorite getaway is actually upstate New York. There are amazing cabins in the middle of nature; it’s so beautiful!

CLOSET CHECK: I can’t really describe my personal style; I kind of dress according to my mood. I do like to shop at Club Monaco (MAP IT), Free People (MAP IT), Reformation (MAP IT, x) and, for shoes, Tod’s (MAP IT).

BEAUTY BLACK BOOK: Oasis Day Spa somewhere near 35th Street (MAP IT, x). I always get the deep tissue massage— it’s the best!

FIT PICK: I have a crazy fitness routine: I work out 5 days a week for one hour and a half. I train with Roger (x) at the NYSC on Mercer Street (MAP IT, x)— he’s the best and he knows what I need my body to look like. I’ve noticed a crazy difference [in my body] since I started training with him!

ULTIMATE NY MOMENT: When my mother came to town for the first time, we were walking down Broadway and talking when suddenly she started screaming, “Oh my god, this ambulance and these people are so loud! How can you even hear me?” I was like, “Ambulance? I didn’t even notice the ambulance.” That’s when I realized I had become a New Yorker. Only New Yorkers are immune to the loud noise of the streets!
