Nell Diamond

Designer, Hill House Home

| West Village

When the storied pages of Vogue double as your wedding album, you’re probably not too short on the “pinch me” moments. Ditto goes for donning two (yes, two) custom-designed dresses by designers Olivier Theyskens and Prabal Gurung for said storybook big day. Of course, we’re talking about Nell Diamond here and her dreamy 2014 nuptials to beau Teddy Wasserman (think a South of France celebration that would have made Marie Antoinette proud). Still, Diamond’s day-to-day is grounded in much more than clouds. Equipped with degrees from two Ivys— undergrad from Princeton and her master’s from Yale— the native New Yorker is no stranger to the age-old power of blood, sweat and tears. The result? Diamond’s newly-launched luxury bedding brand, Hill House Home. A reaction to the void for high-quality bedding with fresh, youthful appeal, the company features white-only bed sets in percale and cotton sateen. All five collections are subtle, yet elegant, though the hemstitched Vale design instantly inspired visions of tucking into such a cozy, comfy bed. A girl can dream, right? Right… on second thought, Diamond may just have her head in the clouds— now ours too— and we’re totally, totally okay with that. Here, she sits down with CITIPHILE to reveal her little black book on NYC.

NEIGHBORHOOD STANDBY: Barbuto (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x)— the best chicken and pasta and it’s always buzzing with good energy.

COFFEE OR TEA: Iced coffee in the morning; mint or green tea all day! My favorite coffee is from Grounded Coffee (MAP IT, x).

ALL-TIME FAVORITE RESTAURANT: Raoul’s (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x)! My parents used to go there on dates before they had kids and we’ve been going ever since! Nothing better than Raoul’s steak-frites (and bread-basket…).

COCKTAIL DE LA NUIT: I don’t really drink very often so if I’m having a cocktail, it needs to be really weak and really girly. I love a paloma with extra juice and I’ll order anything that comes in a pineapple or with an umbrella.

GIRLS NIGHT OUT: For dinner: Mr. Chow (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) or Indochine (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) great people watching and amazing energy. For dancing: Paul’s Baby Grand (MAP IT, x), Acme (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) or anywhere with good music (read 90’s hip-hop).

AFTER-WORK HAPPY HOUR: I love an after-work tea at The Crosby Hotel (MAP IT, x) or Sant Ambroeus on Lafayette (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x)— they’re both right near my office so I try to do meetings at both places!

MUSIC PICK: Paul’s Baby Grand and Acme always have great music. I also love the Barclays Center (MAP IT, x)— the Beyoncé concert there was possibly the greatest night of my life aside from my wedding!

BEST BRUNCH: Russ & Daughters (MAP IT, x). I grew up in London until I was 18 and I have spent every year since then making up for the [previous] lack of bagels in my life!

BEST PEOPLE WATCHING: Grand Central Station (MAP IT). I spent the last two years commuting to business school at Yale so I spent a lot of time waiting for trains. It’s like watching a movie standing there— so many things happening!

HEALTHY STAPLE: Café Clover (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) for one of their amazing salads or the salmon and brussels sprouts.

GUILTY PLEASURE: Corner Bistro (MAP IT, x) for a burger and fries! And then, immediately afterwards, to Big Gay Ice Cream (MAP IT, x) for a “Salty Pimp” (vanilla ice cream, dulce de leche, sea salt, chocolate dip).

NY’S BEST-KEPT SECRET: It’s definitely not a secret, but I don’t think people take enough advantage of The New York Public Library (MAP IT, x)— they have some amazing pieces there. I love to go explore!

FIRST THING I MISS WHEN I’M AWAY: My family! And the sounds; I can’t fall asleep without city sounds.

REGULAR AT: Café Clover! It’s my best friend Kyle’s restaurant and it’s become a clubhouse for all of our friends. I’m there at least twice a week. I’m also obsessed with books and I love McNally Jackson (MAP IT, x) so you’ll find me there rifling through the stacks pretty often!

DATE NIGHT STANDBY: So many good ones: La Grenouille (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) if we’re feeling fancy; Jeffrey’s Grocery (MAP IT, x) for cozy neighborhood vibes; L’Artusi (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) for amazing pasta.

DELIVERY GO-TO: Tartine (MAP IT, x) for spicy chicken, Pinto (MAP IT, x) for great Thai food, Spunto (MAP IT, x) for pizza, and on really lazy Sunday mornings, we love to Postmates (xSadelle’s (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x)!

TO SEE AND BE SEEN: The Bowery Hotel (MAP IT, x), Bilboquet (MAP IT, x), Acme, Café Clover, and Indochine!

TO ESCAPE AND UNWIND: In NYC, I go uptown to my parents’ apartment to unwind. My parents are both very tidy so their apartment is the cleanest, brightest, happiest place. I go visit them, hang out with my dog and turn off my phone.

GO-TO GETAWAY: My husband and I have a house in Amagansett so we love going there on weekends when we don’t have to be in NYC. We also love to try new places; for our honeymoon, we went to Myanmar and Bhutan for two weeks last year and it was amazing. I love trying somewhere new when we get time off.

CLOSET CHECK: My personal style is probably best described as… overdressed! My friends think I’m crazy showing up to breakfast in 5-inch heels, but I’m just being true to myself! Prabal Gurung is one of my best friends and also an extremely talented designer so I love wearing his clothing as often as I can. It’s cut so beautifully; I really feel elegant when I wear Prabal! Olivier Theyskens is also a close friend (and he designed my wedding dress); I love wearing old pieces from his time at Rochas and Nina Ricci. For shopping: FivestoryFivestory, Fivestory (MAP IT, x). It’s the most beautiful jewel box of a store and I love it so much for jewelry, clothing and gifts. It just makes me happy when I walk inside. I also really love Jeffrey online for special pieces from Dior and Chanel, and I’m on Moda Operandi (x) at least once a day— they have such a good selection.

BEST HOME DÉCOR: My interior style is always changing. I’m consistently pretty classic, but I like to add in modern pieces as accents. I love contemporary art and I love the way something extremely modern like a Tracey Emin neon looks with really classic, elegant antiques. I buy all my linens from Hill House Home (x) of course, and for special pieces, I love 1st Dibs (x), ABC Carpet & Home (MAP IT, x) and One Kings Lane (x).

THE MAKINGS OF A PERFECT BED: It’s such a personal thing— everyone has their own bed style! I love having lots of pillows (at least three Euro shams and a few regular pillows) and a big, fluffy white duvet!

HILL HOUSE HOME PICK: I’m obsessed with monogramming weird phrases on my pillows. My favorite collection is The Waverly and I probably have ten pillows with different things on them; one says “Nap Queen” and another says “Love me always.”

BEST HOST/HOSTESS GIFTS: Hill House Home! I’ve been giving our mini-boudoir pillows as gifts with monograms in the center. I also love the candles at Fivestory and sending flowers from Ovando (MAP IT, x).

BEAUTY BLACK BOOK: I feel like I am very lucky to say this, but I’ve never colored my hair and I rarely cut it. For eyebrows, I go to Maurizio (x) at Bergdorf (MAP IT, x) and for makeup, I love Dana Rae Ashburn (x)– she’s the only person who understands how pale I am and doesn’t add tons of contour!

FIT PICK: I walk everywhere! I have a fear of group exercise so if I go to the gym, it’s for the elliptical!

ULTIMATE NY MOMENT: When I moved to New York after college, I lived with three of my best college girlfriends. During Hurricane Sandy, one of my friends went out to a bar and left her wallet in a cab. A year later, someone from the FBI knocked on our door and told us that one of America’s Most Wanted criminals was found with her driver’s license in his wallet. I guess this guy had found my friend’s wallet and decided to keep her license on him for a full year until he was arrested! So creepy, so… New York?
