On Our Radar: Wear Where When

WHERE WE’RE GOING AND WHAT WE’RE WEARING– FROM MORNING TO MIDNIGHT.

New this month, we’re introducing On Our Radar, a dawn-’til-dusk round-up of the hideaways, hot spots and happenings we’re crushing on most in New York and Los Angeles. Here, we’ll be keeping track of can’t-miss openings, upcoming art shows, buzzed-about kitchens and sub rosa events, all of which we’re curating by when to go where. And, because we have maj gal pals like Marielou and Chloe Bartoli, Jessica de Ruiter and Maryam Malakpour, we’re thrilled to announce we’ll be raiding beauty boutique VIOLET GREY‘s medicine cabinets from now on to provide up-to-date tips on what to wear where, too. Why exactly? Well, after the aforementioned ladies filled us in on their shared beauty secret weapon, our Editorial Director, Alexandria Geisler decided to pay the Melrose shop a visit. One makeup consultation with a VG-appointed artist and several fiancé-distressing hours later (thank god for plush waiting room chairs), and she, too, was smitten. Whereas tons of cosmetics stores line their shelves with near-identical inventory, VIOLET GREY stocks lesser-known, Hollywood-approved (by celebrities and makeup artists alike) products like antioxidant oils, detoxifying masks and brow definers– many of which are organic, chemical-free and completely exclusive to them. What’s more is that, in an over saturated market where figuring out an effective beauty routine is more intimidating than ever, VIOLET GREY’s goods actually work– no, you won’t find 42 brow pencil options; just 5, but they’ll be the industry’s absolute best. Essentially, they’re beauty’s most curated guide which, if you haven’t heard, is sort of our thing, too. Today, we’re launching our first On Our Radar installment with our current West Coast crushes, but be sure to check back next week for our New York picks du jour.

Morning Nirvana | Counter Culture LA
Yes, in Los Angeles, the words “pour-over” and “fair-trade” are exchanged almost as frequently as “Kardashian,” but somehow we’re no less excited for Silver Lake’s newest brew house: Counter Culture. Complete with an outdoor patio, sit-down bar and small kitchen, the coffee shop doesn’t just sling your morning cup of joe; it hosts brewing seminars where you can pick up basics like coffee-to-water ratios, pour-over methods and DIY latte art (they also host coursed classes intended for professional baristas). And, perhaps most exciting, Counter Culture offers free coffee tastings every Friday morning at 10 am where its esteemed team chats flavor profiles and complexities of the featured roast. “Free” and “pour-over”— now, there’s a combo you don’t hear every day. Wake-Up Make-Up: Our three best friends come morning: 1. iS Clinical’s Youth Eye Complex to effectively remove dark circles 2. SK-II’s Facial Treatment Essence to diminish fine lines and brighten skin 3. Olas’ Marine-Bio Active Mouthrinse to remove post-Counter Coffee coffee breath

erv

Grab-n-Go | Erven
A new plant-based eatery, Erven had us at its sweet potato bread… and then its smoked eggplant summer squash, sriracha carrots, and rhubarb-balsamic roasted peaches atop of avocado toast. Throw in the fact that the Westside café intends for their food to be quick and healthful takeaway, and we have our new go-to, weekday lunch spot. There is a rotating selection of market salads and sandwiches to choose from, plus raw sweets like stacked coffee-date cookies stuffed with frozen cinnamon custard… Really. (MAP IT)

Healthy Living From the Outside In: Live healthfully from beauty to bowl by using products that nourish you from the outside in. 1. Chantecaille’s Pure Rose Water moisturizes skin, promotes anti-aging and bonus: it’s vegan-friendly 2. Susanne Kaufmann’s Detox Oil Scrub detoxifies and improves blood circulation while exfoliating skin

Ladies Lunch | Baroo
Ladies’ lunch… in a strip mall? Well, when said mall happens to include a former Daniel and Noma chef’s first solo project— which, BTW, centers around seasonal bowls— we say, one thousand times yes. Of course, we’re talking about the hip brainchild of chef Kwang Uh and Matthew Kim, Baroo. The airy, minimalist café has been drumming up praise since its opening last September, but as the culinary duo settles in, their food only continues to get better. A pickle sampler of shiso beets, passion fruit ‘krout and watermelon rind tastes delightfully of summer (their pickling pantry is also insane); while its famed Bibim salad (assorted grains with fennel, celery, asparagus, toasted pumpkin and sunflower seeds, passion fruit powder, Asian pear and san marzano dressing) and basmati rice bowl with lemongrass coconut foam, shrimp chips and heirloom tomatoes taste even sweeter now that their ingredients are in-season. Whatever you order, we’d top it with Baroo’s 63-degree-Celsius sous vide egg and pineapple-jalapeño salsa, and come with friends so that you can taste-test multiple bowls. Sharing is caring (and decisions don’t sound fun, let’s be real). (MAP IT)

Midday Glow: We like a no-fuss, natural glow for day so there’s really only three things we carry in our bag at all times: 1. RMS Living Beauty Luminizer for model-glowy skin (it works like a dream) 2. DiorShow Brow Styler for defined and feathered brows 3. By Terry Baume de Rose Nutri-Couleur Lip Balm— thanks to its blend of essential oils and shea butter, our lips have never felt softer, plus its subtle matte tint does just enough to amp up our natural color.

Afternoon Delight | Magpies Softserve Silver Lake
When it comes to dessert, we love a good “choose-your-own-adventure” bar so when we caught wind of a “chef-ified Dairy Queen” opening in time for summer, we were dying to learn more. Thankfully, situated in Silver Lake, Magpies Softserve didn’t disappoint. Featuring daily flavors like Peanut Butter Pretzel and Thai Tea, the treat shop encourages making each your own via toppings— read: there’s plenty of candied pecans and chocolate covered honeycomb to go around. We’re partial to their vegan Almond Joy and Sweetened Cream flavors topped with the aforementioned honeycomb and chocolate sauce (theirs is Guittard), but we guess we’ll let you take it from here… (MAP IT)

Treat Yourself: We like rainbow sprinkles on our ice cream and we like when our beauty products go candy-coated too. Bright and light for summer, we’re mildly obsessed with 1. By Terry Hyaluronic Blush in Peach Posh (it tints and illuminates cheekbones in a subtle way) 2. RGB Nail Color Crème in 106 Doll– the perfect summer nude with just a hint of ballet slipper pink 3. Charlotte Tilbury Lip Lustre in High Society– the rosy hue is sweet, but discreet; it’s our new go-to gloss.

Happy Hour | Here’s Looking at You
Japanese meets Mexican meets K-Town makes Here’s Looking at You one of the more interesting Los Angeles openings as of late. What makes it more interesting still is that the venue is quickly becoming one of our favorite meeting places for an after-work cocktail. All of the drinks are excellent riffs on classics, though we come to the swanky bar specifically for its Café du Monde coffee-infused negroni and its watermelon-mezcal margarita (its topped with pink Himalayan sea salt). There’s always an option for gourmet sustenance too— feta-roasted nectarines and ramp-beef tartare never hurt anybody. (MAP IT)

Things we're obsessed with:

Day-to-Night in Three Swipes: We’re not joking. A swipe of the eye, a line of the lip and a juge of the hair, and we went from burnt-out assistant to kick-ass boss lady in 60-seconds flat- now that’s grounds for a toast. 1. Jillian Dempsey’s Lind Tint in Plum- all you need is one swipe and your eyes are done (BTW it’s also organic, vegan and antioxidant-packed) 2. Charlotte Tilbury’s Lip Cheat Lip Liner in Hollywood Honey (color the whole lip) because ’90s lips are all we ever really wanted anyways 3. Oribe’s Dry Texturing Spray – the travel size fits in our purse and literally rises flat hair from the dead.

Date Night | Kali
Creative plates, centrally located, and cool, Kali hits all of our date night pre-reqs and then some. We love that the former-supper-club-turned-restaurant uses only California-sourced ingredients, and that its thoughtfully balanced menu of vegetable-centric and meat dishes means that both you and your partner— be they paleo, vegan, pescetarian or gluten-free— will be able to enjoy a meal here (an increasingly rare luxury these days). For the plant-preferred, Kali’s beet tartare and pistachio-crusted charred avocado are winning expressions of vegetable potential; for the land and sea-inclined, the black cod with white chocolate and almond, and the rosemary peach pork loin are current standouts. Surely, neither of you will be left wanting more. (MAP IT)

s

Date Night Done Right: 1. Chantecaille Longest Lash Faux Cils Mascara is hands-down our favorite mascara; it’s three-for-three on volume, lengthening and long-lasting 2. Maison Margiela Replica Jazz Club Eau de Toilette smells like vanilla, tobacco and rum rolled into one, and if you’re not versed on the magic of tobacco fragrances, make yourself privy. There’s nothing more seductive (Really) 3. Serge Lutens Water Lip Color in 5 Terre d’Ombres– it’s a water-based stain that lasts hours, plus its demure brownish hue looks major with the aforementioned Charlotte Tilbury pencil.
