Phoebe and Annette Stephens

Jewelry Designers, Anndra Neen

| L.E.S.

Fashion must be kind to sisters— take The Row’s Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, Rodarte’s Kate and Laura Mulleavy or Annette and Phoebe Stephens, the sister act behind contemporary jewelry brand, Anndra Neen. The Stephens’ launched their line in 2009 after an inspiring trip to Japan, though their taste for design is a combination of both nurture and nature. Yes, their grandmother was a celebrated jewelry designer in Mexico City (her pieces caught the discerning eyes of women like Frida Kahlo and Peggy Guggenheim) and their father a talented painter, but Phoebe and Annette are also of that rare camp of women who will wear a technicolor Kashmiri coat to run mundane errands around Manhattan and look nothing short of chic— in other words, style is in their souls. For Anndra Neen, mixed metal pieces are handcrafted in Mexico City, all of which balance strength with organic femininity. Their sculpted cuffs, chokers and clutches are brand signatures— especially of the cage variety— lending an unusual sense of art to the jewelry, rather than strictly ornamentation; it’s fashion with real staying power. Here, the girls sit down with CITIPHILE to reveal their little black book on NYC.

NEIGHBORHOOD STANDBY:
We love Café Mogador (MAP IT, x) for lunch. The tagines and Moroccan salad are our favorite dishes. The food is homey and delicious!

COFFEE OR TEA: Tea lattes and iced coffee from Ninth Street Espresso (MAP IT, x). They are purists when it comes to coffee.

ALL-TIME FAVORITE RESTAURANT: Kajitsu (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) is one of our favorite places in New York— it serves traditional Kaiseki cuisine. The pre-fix menu is sublime.

COCKTAIL DE LA NUIT: A Violet Fizz (gin, lemon, lime, Crème de Violette, egg white, half & half and soda) from Little Branch in the West Village (MAP IT, x)— they make the most delicious drinks. They really take it seriously and they use metal straws which adds that little something “extra” to their cocktails.

LADIES LUNCH: Sant Ambroeus on Lafayette Street (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) is always a good place. The food is yummy, the décor is understated, but sophisticated and, if you are not already there for business, chances are you will run into someone you know and before you know it, you’ll be in the middle of a meeting.

AFTER-WORK HAPPY HOUR: We don’t do happy hour that often, but The Bowery Hotel (MAP IT, x) is a fun place for a drink.

BEST BRUNCH: Remedy Diner on the Lower East Side (MAP IT, x). They have great pancakes and the best Cuban sandwich in the city.

BEST PEOPLE WATCHING: The corner of Bowery and Houston. Stand there for ten minutes and you will see all kinds of exciting things.

HEALTHY STAPLE: El Rey (MAP IT, x) for a crudité salad and the “Avocado del Sur” on pita.

GUILTY PLEASURE: A meal at Bouley (*Location now closed).

NY’S BEST-KEPT SECRET: The secret garden on Hudson.

FIRST THING WE MISS WHEN WE’RE AWAY: The rhythm and energy of the city.

REGULAR AT: The Shibui Spa (MAP IT, x)— we try to go as often as possible. It has a gorgeous pool, you can unwind and spend time in a stress-free environment and they have the best yuzu drinks.

DATE NIGHT STANDBY: Café Moto (*Location now closed)— it’s under the J train. It’s a super cute, romantic place for a date. They play live music and both the food and wine are yummy.

TO SEE AND BE SEEN: Carbone (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x).

TO ESCAPE AND UNWIND: Aire Ancient Baths in Tribeca (MAP IT, x).

CLOSET CHECK: Our style can be described as “mad max-meets-lady who lunches.” We love flea markets and vintage stores. Electric Feathers has beautiful, sexy clothing, as well as interesting books and art objects.

ACCESSORIES PICK: Love Adorned (MAP IT, x) and de Vera (MAP IT, x).

BEST HOME DÉCOR: Our style is eclectic. The most important thing for us is to create a space that is personal which takes time. We respect decorators, but probably wouldn’t use one. We love to mix high and low. We always bring something special back from our travels— that will always add character to a place.

BEST HOST/HOSTESS GIFTS: Love Adorned has amazing gifts; we always find something interesting and unique there.

BEAUTY BLACK BOOK: Our hairstylist, Tommy Buckett (x) at Serge Normant (MAP IT, x) is the best!

FIT PICK: We like Tracy Anderson (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) and running in the mornings along the river.

ULTIMATE NY MOMENT: Every moment here feels like it could only happen in New York, but the best moments, of course, are the ones you don’t share! CP
