Rose Smith

Model

| Williamsburg

Like most of the ladies we know from “Down Under” (including CP alum Jessica Hart), Rose Smith is a natural beauty whose accent immediately charms and whose laid-back cool we often find ourselves wishing we could channel. She’s the kind of girl who looks as beautiful fresh-faced as she does made-up; the one who looks as at home in couture gowns as she does teeny bikinis. One thing that surely separates the model from her fellow Aussies however is this: she’s on a first-name basis with Paris’ most legendary monsieur, Mr. Karl Lagerfeld. In fact, after discovering Smith back in 2011, Lagerfeld made her his personal muse and, just like that, her “big break” came in the form of Chanel and Fendi exclusives. Yep, that’s right— Smith’s very first catwalks and the modeling world’s most sought-after gigs were one in the same— including her walk for Chanel at Couture Week (AKA the holy grail of fashion weeks). Since, she’s strutted for luxe labels like Dries Van Noten, Dolce & Gabbana and Erdem, all of which you can catch on her Instagram, but you may want to proceed with caution: as an accomplished, off-duty baker, Smith peppers her fashion ‘grams with mouth-watering shots of her impressive sweets (think chocolate peanut butter tarts and gluten-free cake). How’s that for eye candy? Here, Smith sits down with CITIPHILE to reveal her little black book on NYC.

NEIGHBORHOOD STANDBY: Five Leaves (MAP IT, x) for a kale salad or a burger and truffle fries; everything on their menu is delicious and of amazing quality!

COFFEE OR TEA: Tea at Sweetleaf (MAP IT, x)they have this vanilla peppermint tea that I love.

ALL-TIME FAVORITE RESTAURANT: St. Anselm (MAP IT, x) for the butcher’s steak, spinach gratin and truffled mashed potatoes— it is one of my favorite meals!

COCKTAIL DE LA NUIT: Anything spicy with mezcal. I love the “Devil’s Garden” (chipotle-infused mezcal, cynar, lime juice, agave and mint) from Hotel Delmano (MAP IT, x). Also, Temple Bar (MAP IT, xhas great mixologists so all of their cocktails are made to perfection (its atmosphere is cozy and relaxed which can be a nice change compared to other cocktail bars too).

GIRLS NIGHT OUT: Cienfuegos in the East Village (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x).

AFTER-WORK HAPPY HOUR: The rooftop of SoHo House (MAP IT, x) (in the summer) or Maison Premiere (MAP IT, BOOK ITx) for a great oyster happy hour anytime.

MUSIC PICK: I like all genres— a good song is a good song no matter what style. Generally speaking, I like music I can dance to! I just started going to this new place called Casablanca (MAP IT, x) and they play really good music (a mix of old-school 80’s and contemporary).

BEST BRUNCH: Café Mogador in Williamsburg (MAP IT, x); they have amazing Halloumi eggs. Also, Five Leaves has the best pancakes I’ve ever tasted— they’re these ricotta pancakes with honeycomb butter. If I’m in the city, I love the avocado toast at Café Gitane (MAP IT, x).

BEST PEOPLE WATCHING: Union Square.

HEALTHY STAPLE: Mulberry and Vine (MAP IT, x) for salmon with brussels sprouts and roasted cauliflower.

GUILTY PLEASURE: Pizza from Emmy Squared (MAP IT, x) or Rubirosa (MAP IT, BOOK ITx).

NY’S BEST-KEPT SECRET: The mushroom ravioli at Gaia’s Italian Café (MAP IT, x).

FIRST THING I MISS WHEN I’M AWAY: Seamless and the convenience of nothing ever being closed.

REGULAR AT: I try to mix up where I eat and drink so that I can find new spots, but I do end up eating around my neighborhood most often! My favorite spots are Five Leaves and Traif (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) (get the tasting menu because it’s amazing).

DATE NIGHT STANDBY: Nighthawk Cinema (MAP IT, x) is cute. They have a good mix of alternative movies and more mainstream films. Plus, you can order food and cocktails to your seat…

DELIVERY GO-TO: Quinoa Kitchen (MAP IT, x) for a kale salad with salmon or Taco Chulo (MAP IT, x) for the “Ensalada Mejicana” (lettuce, black beans, shredded cheese, guacamole, pico de gallo, tortilla strips, cabbage and chipotle dressing).

TO SEE AND BE SEEN: The Blond (MAP IT, x).

TO ESCAPE AND UNWIND: A walk anywhere along the water.

TO GET INSPIRED: I love going to photo exhibits or checking out a new show at an art gallery like The Whitney (MAP IT, x).

GO-TO GETAWAY: I love heading to upstate New York like to Hudson or to the Woodstock/Catskills area— I try and go a few times a year. If you’re up there, there is an amazing restaurant called Gaskins in Germantown (MAP IT, x) right near Hudson.

CLOSET STAPLE: My style usually consists of classic essentials mixed with a few more rock-n’-roll pieces. I do a lot of my shopping online (via Net-a-Porter (x), but if I’m in the mood for shopping in the city, I’ll head to Barneys (MAP IT, x), Intermix (MAP IT, x), Alexander Wang (MAP IT, x) or Saint Laurent (MAP IT, x). Also, Vintage Twin (MAP IT, x) has an amazing selection of Vintage Levi’s— I am still searching for the perfect pair, but they give me hope!

BEST HOST/HOSTESS GIFTS: You can’t go wrong with a bottle of wine or a candle. For wine, the staff at Astor Wines (MAP IT, x) is always really helpful (they have a great selection); for candles, my favorites are by Diptyque (MAP IT, x).

BEAUTY BLACK BOOK: Michael Angelo (x) from Wonderland (MAP IT, x)— he is a genius when it comes to coloring blonde hair! I don’t even tell him what I want anymore because I trust him completely!

FIT PICK: I work out 2-4 times a week. I do Kayla Istine’s “Bikini Body” guide in my building’s gym 2-3 times a week. I also love Body by Simone (MAP IT, BOOK ITx) for more of a cardio and toning-based workout— it’s really fun!

ULTIMATE NY MOMENT: I once got a phone call from a friend telling me to meet her at The Mercer Hotel in 30 minutes so I rushed over there. When I arrived, a group of our friends were jumping into escalades bound for Madison Square Garden, and soon, we were backstage with Kanye and Jay-Z as they psyched up to perform for their “Watch the Throne” show. For the performance, we had these amazing seats right up in the front; and afterwards, we hung out with them and Beyoncé for a while longer… I even played Kanye in a game of ConnectFour— sadly, he won. It was a pretty crazy, out-of-the-blue night! CP
