Jane Larkworthy

Beauty Director, W

| Midtown East

Lash-tripling mascara, topical pore minimizers and wrinkle-reducing eye creams… seldom is there a beauty product out there that Jane Larkworthy hasn’t heard of (or, more importantly, test-driven). The Beauty Director of W for 14 years, Larkworthy knows her polishes, serums and scents— her perennial column, “Jane’s Addiction” could double as a playlist for the beauty industry’s “Greatest Hits” (think Tom Ford, Clarins, Aesop and Dolce & Gabbana). And yet, she’s more girl-next-door than glamourai— she weekends in the Berkshires, styles her black poodle, Remy (yes, @dailyremy is the posh pup’s Instagram account) and now, quite hilariously, documents her amateur cooking capers in her new blog, The Fraudulent Chef. Here, Larkworthy sits with CITIPHILE to reveal her little black book on NYC.

NEIGHBORHOOD STANDBY: Tanaka Sushi (MAP IT, x). Atmosphere-wise, it’s nothing special, but we love their Agedashi tofu and udon noodle soup— it’s comfort food.

COFFEE OR TEA: A latte! The best is at Little Collins on Lexington Avenue and 56th Street (MAP IT, x) because everyone there is really nice (no holier-than-thou barista attitude) with a good sense of humor, but they still take their latte-making very seriously. (*For nearly two years, my morning drink of choice was an iced lemonade with a shot of espresso; I discovered it at Smith Canteen (MAP IT, x), a café in Carroll Gardens that my friends, Kerry Diamond and Rob Newton own. It’s called a “Thunderbolt,” and I’ve turned many a coffee shop far and wide onto it (opinions vary widely), but it just became too yellowing to my teeth so I’m back to lattes… almond lattes.

ALL-TIME FAVORITE RESTAURANT: I’m so bad at this! I love Balaboosta (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) for their smoked eggplant crostini, ABC Kitchen (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) for their kabocha squash toast (yes, I like toast) Wilma Jean (MAP IT, x) for their fried chicken, Umami Burger (MAP IT, x) for their truffle burger and Maialino (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) for the fettuccine alla Bolognese.

COCKTAIL DE LA NUIT: Campari and soda with a slice of orange. I’m so not a bar frequenter, but ever since Jill Kargman and I met for a drink at Daniel (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x), I’ve found it a most civilized spot for a cocktail and discreet enough for good gossiping.

GIRLS DINNER: The East Pole (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) is a great dinner place. I love their burrata and the chicken Kiev.

BEST PEOPLE WATCHING: The High Line (MAP IT). It’s got an interesting dichotomy since it’s great for people watching, but also quite meditative.

HEALTHY STAPLE: One Lucky Duck (*Location now closed) for the spicy sesame salad— I love this salad so much I devour it like a barbarian so I usually shut my office door when I eat it… Nice visual, eh?

GUILTY PLEASURE: Freds (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) triple dip french fries.

NY’S BEST-KEPT SECRET: Bianca (*Location now closed)— wonderful pasta.

FIRST THING I MISS WHEN I’M AWAY: The rivers and the action along them.

CLOSET CHECK: Classic with a utilitarian twist. I like shopping at Jil Sander, Zara (MAP IT) or Barneys (MAP IT, x). If I’ve got a vintage fix, I’ll head up to Sofia’s in Greenwich, CT (MAP IT, x); they have great finds there.

ACCESSORIES PICK: If I could walk around in clogs every day, I would, but evidently I have not succeeded at bringing that trend back. That being said, I remain deeply devoted to the Mise en Dior earrings. I’ve accumulated nearly ten pair including the new marble ones which are SO COOL. Sad as I was to see Raf Simons leave Jil, long may he reign at the House of Dior.

BEST HOST/HOSTESS GIFTS: BarneysJohn Derian (MAP IT, x) or Michele Varian (MAP IT, x).

GIFTS FOR HIM: We’re big road bikers, so we love the chic, sleek gear from Rapha (MAP IT, x). Every birthday, anniversary or holiday, I often wind up there for Bertrand’s gift.

BEAUTY BLACK BOOK: Gina Gilbert (x), colorist at Serge Normant (MAP IT, x)— no one does blonde like she does. Kristina Holey (x) is an amazing facialist who just came back from Paris (she was studying under Joelle Ciocco), but you must check her website for her current whereabouts.

ULTIMATE NY MOMENT: One late night, my husband and I were taking our dog out for her nightly walk. An SUV pulled up in front of the poshest address on our block and Shirley MacLaine stepped out, carrying her small dog. “Would you know the best place to walk a dog around here?” she asked us. I recognized her immediately; my husband, not as quickly. “This block you’re on is pretty quiet,” I said. She thanked us and headed inside. Wild moment, weird question. CP
