Karla Martinez de Salas

Fashion Market and Accessories Director, W

| NoHo

From front-row snaps at Chanel shows to inspired looks du jour, Karla Martinez’ Instagram account is proof alone that she has style in spades. Originally from Texas, the Fashion Market and Accessories Director of W is part-country, part-city with an affinity for artsy prints and color-on-color. She started at W as an intern in college, though she went on to work with industry power editor Nina Garcia (then at ELLE), followed by editor positions at Vogue, The New York Times and Interview before returning to W. Now, whether she’s posting photos of recent market appointment obsessions (think gem-encrusted Chanel pendants and a blow-dryer printed Louis Vuitton mini skirt) or must-see art exhibitions, her incredible eye for design is undeniable. Here, Martinez sits down with CITIPHILE to reveal her little black book on NYC.

NEIGHBORHOOD STANDBY: There are a few: Vic’s (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x), BONDST (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x), Indochine (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) and Lure Fishbar (MAP IT, BOOK ITx).

COFFEE OR TEA: Coffee, but I’ll drink tea occasionally. The best cappuccino in the city is at Via Quadronno (MAP IT, x)— it tastes like Italy.

ALL-TIME FAVORITE RESTAURANT: That’s a hard one, but I always recommend Indochine— it’s like the fashion canteen. I get sticky rice and steak.

COCKTAIL DE LA NUIT: Tequila and passion fruit at Casa (MAP IT, x), though I only really like going to Bemelmans (MAP IT, x) when I go out for drinks. The Happiest Hour (MAP IT, x) is supposed to be nice.

GIRLS’ NIGHT OUT: Baby Grand (MAP IT, x).

BEST BRUNCH: I love Lure Fishbar— they play great music, it’s never crowded and the burger is the best.

BEST PEOPLE WATCHING: The Waverly Inn (MAP IT, BOOK ITx), Indochine and Balthazar (MAP IT, BOOK ITx).

HEALTHY STAPLE: Sant Ambroeus (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) for an omelette.

GUILTY PLEASURE: I adore the chocolate molten cookies at Sant Ambroeus too!

FIRST THING I MISS WHEN I’M AWAY: The subway and being able to walk everywhere.

REGULAR AT: Vic’s, Punch Fitness (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) and Pure Yoga (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x). I like consistency!

DATE NIGHT STANDBY: My husband and I love going for good, easy sushi downstairs at BONDST. We haven’t been on a date in a while, but I heard Gato (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) is also great.

DELIVERY GO-TO: Frank (MAP IT, x) or Otto (MAP IT, BOOK ITx).

CLOSET CHECK: I am a little all over the place— call it a twist on classic and feminine with an occasional edge. I shop at Barneys (MAP IT, x), Bergdorf Goodman (MAP IT, x), Maison Kitsuné (MAP IT, x), Céline (MAP IT) and Gap (MAP IT). I like Maison Kitsuné for cool new things, Mish (MAP IT, x) for gorgeous jewels and de Vera (MAP IT, x) for beautiful, one-of-a-kind finds.

ACCESSORIES PICK: For accessories, Kirna Zabete (MAP IT, x), Fivestory (MAP IT, x) (FYI, it also has a beautiful baby selection) and Dover Street Market (MAP IT, x) have great things. Taffin (MAP IT, x) has a stunning jewelry salon for major splurges too.

BEST HOST/HOSTESS GIFTS: Barneys, Michele Varian (MAP IT, x) or Dashwood Books (MAP IT, x).

BEAUTY BLACK BOOK: Chris Lospalluto (x) at Sharon Dorram at Sally Hershberger (MAP IT, x) for great hair!

FIT PICK: Twice a week, I work out at Punch Fitness on the Upper East Side, I just started to practice Ashtanga yoga more regularly with Scott Harig at Pure, and I love to run outside but for the winter, I just joined Mile High Run Club (MAP IT, x).

ULTIMATE NY MOMENT: Only in NYC do people call to return wallets, handbags, etc. and only here do I meet a person from my mom’s small town in Mexico at a yoga class. CP
