We all know “the camera doesn’t lie,” but what if it could beautify the mundane? to make the ordinary feel slightly less so? Such is the case with Pamela Hanson’s lens. She’s given us Christy Turlington sipping on Dean & DeLuca coffee, Heidi Klum reading the morning paper, Victoria Beckham surrounded by groceries and Carla Bruni lighting up a cigarette. And we haven’t even touched on her series of women in urban dwellings— Hanson’s image of a woman applying lipstick with her feet atop a vanity is as iconic as the photographer herself. Her over 20-year-old career has seen her work in the pages of ELLE, GQ, Glamour and Vogue (that’s American, French, English, German and Italian btw), not to mention she’s shot major campaigns for brands like Max Mara, Armani, Lancôme and Halston. It’s Hanson’s ability to capture raw humanity- the moments of happiness, exuberance and life- that never fails to leave an imprint on our minds and in our hearts. Here, the photographer sits down with CITIPHILE to reveal her little black book on NYC.

NEIGHBORHOOD STANDBY: Sushi Seki on 23rd Street (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x). I like the sushi (chef’s choice) and the Hijiki salad.

COFFEE OR TEA: Coffee at Café Grumpy (MAP IT, x) because it’s amazing!

ALL-TIME FAVORITE RESTAURANT: Shuko (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x). Everything is delicious— I always go with whatever the chef thinks is freshest that day. Bar Pitti (MAP IT, x) is another favorite— all the pasta is good, but the broccoli raab and sausage is my go-to.

COCKTAIL DE LA NUIT: Tequila on the rocks with fresh lime juice, preferably at home.

MUSIC PICK: I like hip hop and R&B. DJ Charlie Klarsfeld (x) at Better Days (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) is great.

BEST BRUNCH: Sant Ambroeus in SoHo (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x)— delicious food, good crowd and I love the maître d’, Ali.

AFTER-WORK HAPPY HOUR: At home or at The Bowery Hotel (MAP IT, x).

HEALTHY STAPLE: Westville (MAP IT, x) for salmon or soup.

GUILTY PLEASURE: ABC Cocina (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) has the best Mexican food and I love ABC Kitchen‘s (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) crab toast.

NY’S BEST-KEPT SECRET: Harlem, although it’s not much of a secret.

FIRST THING I MISS WHEN I’M AWAY: Daily human contact, the madness, and the availability of anything one wants whenever one wants it!

REGULAR AT: Dashwood Books (MAP IT, x)— I go at least once a month to flip through great books. The owner, David Strettell is wonderful and knowledgable.

DATE NIGHT STANDBY: Any of the above! We like cozy, quiet and close to home.

DELIVERY GO-TO: Westville for salmon and a salad or Omai (MAP IT, ORDER IT, x)— I love their dumpling soup.

DREAM SHOOT LOCATION: Central Park, the streets of Brooklyn or any of the city’s great hotels.

CLOSET CHECK: My style is casual, easy and comfortable. I like Céline (MAP IT), Acne (MAP IT) and Isabel Marant (MAP IT). I mostly shop online on Net-a-Porter and Matches Fashion.

BEST HOST/HOSTESS GIFTS: John Derian (MAP IT, x) or Aero (MAP IT, x).

BEAUTY BLACK BOOK: Orlo Salon (MAP IT, x) for haircuts and color.

FIT PICK: I box, run and practice yoga. Aerospace (MAP IT, x) with Leila Fazel or Michael Olajide, and Yoga Shanti (MAP IT, x) with Colleen Saidman (x) or Rodney Yee (x) are my favorites.

ULTIMATE NY MOMENT: There are so many small moments. It’s often an encounter on the subway (which to me is a melting pot of NY) that feels like a “NY” moment. Recently, I was riding the subway back downtown when there was a mass exodus because of an oncoming storm. Everyone was openly talking, laughing and sharing stories. My favorite times in NY are always about random human support and contact. CP
