Marc Beckman

CEO, DMA United

| Gramercy

Marc Beckman is sort of like fashion’s Midas— that being that with his touch comes major success. One half of DMA United, Beckman and his business partner, Sam Sohaili, founded their company on a hunch that fashion designers would become celebrities in their own right and would soon need creative advice on brand awareness and development in the digital age (think collaborations, endorsements and retail partnerships). Fast-forward fourteen years and the pair has worked with everyone from Oscar de la Renta and Proenza Schouler’s Jack and Laz to Pamela Love and Sophie Theallet. Remember when Isabel Toledo was named Creative Director of Anne Klein? DMA United. How about Pamela Love’s capsule collection for Topshop? DMA United. Nigel Barker’s newest book, Models of Influence? D-M-A… you get the drift. Today, the agency doesn’t just deal with designers either: its current client roster includes stars like Hilary Swank, Russell Westbrook and Karen Elson too. Essentially, if we could pick a captain of our ship— err, career, we’d pick Beckman. Every. Single. Time. Here, he sits down with CITIPHILE to reveal his little black book on NYC.

NEIGHBORHOOD STANDBY: Sunburst (MAP IT, x), every single day for breakfast (poached eggs, turkey and green tea).

COFFEE OR TEA: Tea at Lady Mendl’s (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x). My mother-in-law, Naomi built it!

ALL-TIME FAVORITE RESTAURANT: Le Bernardin (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) of course. Chef Ripert is the king of fish— king of the sea!

COCKTAIL DE LA NUIT: A Ketel One martini, extra dry, straight up with olives. The best one is at Bemelmans at The Carlyle (MAP IT, x), but the best bar in the city is Rose Bar (x) at Gramercy Park Hotel (MAP IT)— great art, architecture and design.

AFTER-WORK HAPPY HOUR: The Crosby Bar is lovely (MAP ITx) or home— I try to get home to my wife, Alice and my son, Jude. Happy hour at my place!

BUSINESS LUNCH: Cipriani Downtown (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x).

MUSIC PICK: I like rock n’ roll, r&b and hip-hop. Some of my favorite artists are John Lennon, Public Enemy, Neil Young, Future, Jimi Hendrix, NWA, The Doors and the Beastie Boys. The best live venue is Madison Square Garden (MAP IT, x).

BEST BRUNCH: Maialino (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) or The Regency Bar & Grill (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x). When the weather is right though, I prefer to stay home and eat on the rooftop with a view of Manhattan.

BEST PEOPLE WATCHING: SoHo, right before Fashion Week.

HEALTHY STAPLE: Balthazar (MAP IT, BOOK ITx) for a salad.

NY’S BEST-KEPT SECRET: If I tell you, I will have to kill you!

FIRST THING I MISS WHEN I’M AWAY: My family and friends.

REGULAR AT: Gramercy Park with my dog, Buzz and the farmer’s market in Union Square (MAP IT, x).

DATE NIGHT STANDBY: Alice and I prefer to mix it up, but somehow, we often end up at Mr. Chow in Tribeca (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x).

DELIVERY GO-TO: Philippe (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) and Turkish Kitchen (MAP IT, ORDER IT, x). Seamless and Postmates are way too convenient.

CLOSET CHECK: My style is modern, updated and heavily influenced from my travels to London, Paris and Milan. I prefer boutique shopping and, of course, Barneys New York (MAP IT, x).

BEST HOST/HOSTESS GIFTS: Bedford Cheese Shop (MAP IT, x).

GROOMING BLACK BOOK: Annie (x) at Marie Robinson rules (MAP IT, x)!

FIT PICK: I meet my trainer Edwin Wealth 3-4 times-a-week at 5:45 am. I run on the “off” days.

ULTIMATE NY MOMENT: My son, Jude, meeting Russell Westbrook (a client) during the NBA All-Star Weekend in NYC! CP
