Daniel Martin

Makeup Artist

| Cobble Hill

You know the ol’ adage, “When the student becomes the master?” Well, while we’re still waiting for that to apply to us come our weekly SoulCycle class, it certainly rings true for makeup artist Daniel Martin who– after apprenticing for makeup mavericks like Pat McGrath and Pati Dubroff (a fellow CP alum)– is somewhat of a legend himself. We mean, he’s the guy with Jessica Alba, Meghan Markle and the Traina sisters on speed-dial… But, we’ll get back to that. Raised in four countries by French-Vietnamese parents, Martin’s foray into the beauty biz began via teaching rising artists at Aveda’s concept salon; however, after a beauty emergency landed him on set for the first time, he became hooked on honing his own artistry instead. Now, Martin is a celebrity makeup artist for the house of Christian Dior, not to mention a consultant for brands like Honest Beauty (bestie Jessica Alba’s line) and, incidentally, Aveda (talk about full circle)– clearly, his solo photo shoot “mishap” was less fluke and more fate. Celebrated for his one-of-a-kind ability to play with light— think illuminated faces that captivate through simplicity— Martin regularly collaborates with designers like Chris Benz, Protagonist and Proenza Schouler (in fact, he’s the one behind the latter’s iconic look-books). When he’s not painting Kate Bosworth’s lashes or shooting for Interview mag though, you’ll find him kicking it in his longtime neighborhood, Cobble Hill. Here, he sits down with CITIPHILE to reveal his little black book on NYC.

NEIGHBORHOOD STANDBY: Henry Public (MAP IT, x) is my local haunt for a great burger and cozy vibe. Their bone marrow toast is incredible too!

COFFEE OR TEA: Always coffee (I’m from Seattle); an almond milk latte from Marquet Patisserie on Court Street (MAP IT, x) is my go-to.

ALL-TIME FAVORITE RESTAURANT: Freemans in the L.E.S. (MAP IT, BOOK ITx) holds near and dear ever since we had our wedding reception there.

COCKTAIL DE LA NUIT: Ginger beer (I don’t drink) from June on Court Street (MAP IT, x)– it’s a great place to meet up with friends after work and I love that it’s only one block from my apartment.

DINNER WITH FRIENDS: Beasts & Bottles on Atlantic Avenue (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) just opened and it has a great menu, plus the room to spread out with a large group.

WHERE TO BRING OUT-OF-TOWNERS: Brooklyn Bridge Park (x), walking south towards Red Hook and ending at Valentino Park (x).

MUSIC PICK: I love all kinds of music, but unfortunately, my most favorite places all closed years ago (Wonderbar in the East Village, Bardo at Bedford & Downing and the original Sound Factory). For now, I know that anywhere my good friend, Michael Magnan is spinning will be great!

BEST BRUNCH: Building on Bond (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x) is awesome! The food is great, the staff is friendly and it’s just a few blocks away.

BEST PEOPLE WATCHING: Washington Square Park.

HEALTHY STAPLE: Juice Press (MAP IT, x) for a roasted vegetable salad.

GUILTY PLEASURE: I have a sweet tooth and the banana cream pie from Mia’s Bakery (MAP IT, x) is my crack addiction!

NY’S BEST-KEPT SECRET: There’s a great spot in my neighborhood on the north side of Atlantic Avenue called Le Boudoir (MAP IT, x)– it’s downstairs from Chez Moi (MAP IT, x) and they have live music and DJ sets on any given night. It feels very Parisian and it’s always very fun!

FIRST THING I MISS WHEN I’M AWAY: My husband and our cat, Weezy!

REGULAR AT: At least once a week, I pop into Nature’s Grill (MAP IT, x) for a “Peanutty Blast” smoothie (peanut butter, banana, soy milk and honey), stop by Warby Parker (MAP IT, x) to check out their new frames, and go to Sephora (MAP IT) to restock my kit.

DATE NIGHT STANDBY: Building on Bond is a perfect chill spot with delicious food and friendly service.

DELIVERY GO-TO: Hands-down, addicted to Caviar and Seamless!

TO SEE AND BE SEEN: You never know who you’ll run into picking up a coffee at Blue Bottle on Dean Street (MAP IT, x); I run into so many clients and friends there.

TO RELAX AND UNWIND: Coney Island is a magical place for me for some reason; I love that there’s still the old New York grit about it.

LOOK OF F/W ’16: Either a statement mouth in deep aubergine– or even navy– or flicks of bold Crayola color statements on the eyes. Fall makeup is about experimental color blocking on the face.

BEAUTY SECRET WEAPON: Vétiver by Christian Dior, Tatcha Soothing Rice Enzyme Powder, Tria Positively Clear Blue Light and Honest Beauty Magic Balm.

INSIDE TIP: If your favorite mascara is dry and on its last leg, squirt a couple drops of eye drop solution into it– it’ll reactivate its moisture.

GO-TO GETAWAY: We have a beach house in New London, CT– it’s our getaway from the city. A local gem [that we love] there is Water Street Vintage (MAP IT, x); it has tons of great vinyl, vintage clothing and quirky, random antiques.

CLOSET CHECK: My personal style can be described as, “utilitarian street wear.” I’m always in black with a random pop of color. I do most of my shopping when I’m in Paris, but I do love Mr. Porter and COS (MAP IT, x).

BEST HOME DÉCOR: Our interior style is all over the place! I’d describe it as, “nostalgic meets contemporary.” We love finding one-of-a-kind pieces on Atlantic Avenue. There are a ton of great home shops there!

BEST HOST/HOSTESS GIFTS: Diptyque on Bergen Street (MAP IT, x).

GROOMING BLACK BOOK: Facials with my girls. Joanna (x) and Yelena at Joanna Vargas (MAP IT, x). Her “Triple Crown” facial is a monthly ritual!

FIT PICK: I do private pilates sessions with Whitney Decena at WLD Pilates (x); she’s incredible and working with her has really strengthened my posture.

ULTIMATE NY MOMENT: When I first moved to New York and I was too broke to go home for the holidays, I spent Christmas Eve dancing into Christmas morning at Limelight (the dance club in Chelsea). To this day, it’s been one of the best Christmases of my life! CP
