Kym Ellery

Designer, Ellery

| Sydney

People will give you a million reasons why you shouldn’t do something— “There’s too much competition,” “You don’t have the proper training,” “Raising money isn’t easy,”— but, if Kym Ellery had listened, she wouldn’t be living out her dream of designing her own clothing line, nor would she be showing its collections in Paris (BTW, she’s one of three Australians to be invited to show during PFW ever). Because let’s remember, despite how epic everyone curates their Instagram feeds to be, dreams are dreams for a reason— they’re aspirational, ambitious, and even a tad crazy; if they weren’t, everyone would be doing them (come to think of it, all of us should probably run from whatever people tell us TO do). But, back to Ellery, the Aussie beauty who launched her namesake, made-in-Sydney brand at age 23— her little-to-no formal fashion training be damned. She enrolled herself in one summer class at Central St Martins, the mecca of design schools, then returned home to intern for RUSSH, a Sydney-based, indie fashion mag. Eventually becoming the pub’s Market Director, she spent most evenings working on her clothes at home. That is, until her former RUSSH colleague-turned-Vogue stylist, Trevor Stones, landed a pair of Ellery tights in Australian Vogue— then, it was time to take the plunge and commit. One decade later and the eponymous label is coveted for its cool girl cuts and bold proportions (think floor-skimming flares, cascading ruffles and balloon epaulets); the designer has been the star of a documentary on her debut at Paris Fashion Week; and, she’s personally dressed style legends like Rihanna, Chloë Sevigny and Alicia Vikander. Now is about the time we’d ask if it gets any cooler, but with S/S ’18 shows just around the corner, we’re sure she has something up her signature, pretty bell sleeve. Here, Ellery sits down with CITIPHILE to reveal her little black book on Sydney.

COFFEE OR TEA: Always tea these days. I actually travel with my favorite green tea, Sencha Matcha Émeraude by Mariage Frères— I guess I’m a tea snob. My favorite spot to go for a cup of tea in Sydney is [a place called] Jackie’s Café in Paddington (MAP IT). You’re bound to bump into a dozen friendly faces you know and the Ellery flagship store is just a stroll up the road.

ALL-TIME FAVORITE RESTAURANT: Fratelli Paradiso in Potts Point (MAP IT). It has ambient lighting, divine service by handsome Italian waiters and legitimate, traditional Italian food (and gluten-free pasta)! I cannot pass up their scampi pasta.

COCKTAIL DE LA NUIT: For a long time, my favorite cocktail has been a negroni. Eau De Vie in Darlinghurst (MAP IT) has some of the city’s best bartenders and a chill, speakeasy vibe. If you are after a spectacular view with your cocktail, Icebergs in Bondi (MAP IT) is a no-brainer.

WHERE TO BRING OUT-OF-TOWNERS: Take a boat around the harbor to witness Sydney in all of its glory. The Opera House (MAP IT) and Sydney Harbor Bridge are best viewed from a boat.

STAY: Rent a beach house on the northern beaches like Whale Beach or Palm Beach. I used to live out there and it is a dream. It is an hour and a half out of Sydney and it feels like another planet— you get to experience Sydney’s native flora and fauna on the footsteps of some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. Stroll down to the boathouse for a leisurely and delicious brunch on the water before hitting the surf.

HEALTHY STAPLE: Sydney is brimming with healthy cafés and supermarkets so it’s not hard to look after yourself [here]. I like to swing by the health supermarket About Life (MAP IT) for a green smoothie. When I am in town, I am always on the go so the convenience of a healthy smoothie or juice definitely suits my lifestyle.

GUILTY PLEASURE: Max Brenner (MAP IT) for chocolate-dipped strawberries.

SYDNEY’S BEST-KEPT SECRET: The CommonsDowntown Bar (MAP IT)— always a good night with awesome live music and an amazing cocktail list.

DATE NIGHT STANDBY: For a relaxed date night, I love Continental in Newtown (MAP IT). After living in France, I have taken to the custom of apéro so I now need a healthy dose of cold meats and cheese to really complete a meal!

TO SEE AND BE SEEN: Icebergs— you will see everyone here.

CLOSET CHECK: My style is androgynous; black; structured, but fluid and always anchored with a significant shoe. I like to shop at Parlour X in Paddington (MAP IT).

ULTIMATE SYDNEY MOMENT: I once witnessed my friend trap a brown snake in the glass enclosure of her shower whilst we waited for the snake catcher to arrive and save the day— only in Sydney… CP
