Nellie Partow

| West Village

You know how they say if you’re going to jump, “do your homework?” Well, it’s clear Nellie Partow was taking notes. It was at the tender age of six that she realized creating her own womenswear label was her life’s calling— since, she’s graduated from business school, worked retail (to identify her future customer, of course), graduated from design school and logged over a decade designing under some of the biggest names in the biz (ahem Donna Karan, Calvin Klein and John Varvatos). Like we said, she’s done some serious homework. Now designing under her own name, Partow weaves loose and strong, detailed and uncomplicated, masculine and feminine. Her clothes— be they generous knits, slinky pajama suits or willowy trousers— are the kinds you can’t wait to slip on, then promptly hope never to take off (good news: we can’t imagine an occasion where you’d need to). Of course, PARTOW’s quality is top-notch (everything is handmade in New York and Italy), but it’s the poetry of the pieces that stands out: each seemingly more ageless, yet powerful than the next. Chalk it up to the designer’s universal inspiration (which spans Milo Baughman to fishtail braids) or her background in boxing (oh, did we not mention Partow has competitively boxed at MSG and won a few titles?!)— either way, PARTOW is a total KO (that’s “knockout,” BTW). Here, she sits down with CITIPHILE to reveal her little black book on NYC.

NEIGHBORHOOD STANDBY: Depends on the meal! There are so many amazing restaurants in NY.15 East (MAP ITBOOK ITx) is one of my favorite restaurants. I usually sit at the bar and order the omakase.

COFFEE OR TEA: Coffee at Alt because it reminds me of the coffee in Italy.

COCKTAIL DE LA NUIT: Anything with mezcal. I like grabbing a drink at The NoMad Hotel bar (MAP ITx).

LADIES LUNCH: I love ABC Kitchen (MAP ITBOOK ITx); it has a nice vibe and great food.

WHERE TO BRING OUT-OF-TOWNERS: One part of NY that I love is the West Side Highway— you can see beautiful views, catch the sunset and see the Statue of Liberty… and, of course, The Met (MAP ITx).

MUSIC PICK: Music is my greatest source of inspiration. I listen to so many different types. I love Sade, The XX and The Blaze. Lately, I’ve been listening to Yves Tumor’s “The Feeling When you Walk Away.”

BEST BRUNCH: I love everything about Banter (MAP IT, x)— the people, the vibe, the incredible food (and I can bring my puppy)!

BEST PEOPLE WATCHING: Everywhere! But, sitting outside Café Gitane (MAP ITx) is great for people watching and it’s a beautiful block.

HEALTHY STAPLE: Sweetgreen’s kale Caesar (MAP IT, x).

GUILTY PLEASURE: A good Shake Shack (MAP ITx) burger and fries.

NY’S BEST-KEPT SECRET: Omen (MAP ITx). It’s one of my favorite Japanese restaurants tucked away in SoHo.

REGULAR AT: My boxing gym, Mendez Boxing (MAP ITx)— I’m there at least 3 days a week! I was a competitive fighter for over 15 years so boxing is a huge part of my life and I love the banter I have with the fighters I grew up with. They were there to support me during my fights at MSG; now, I support them by watching them fight on Showtime and HBO. It’s incredible to see how far so many have come. It’s really amazing!

DATE NIGHT STANDBY: Raoul’s (MAP ITBOOK ITx)— it’s cozy and it has an amazing burger!

TO SEE AND BE SEEN: The Public Hotel (MAP ITx).

TO RELAX AND UNWIND: Home (watching a great film)!

GO-TO GETAWAY: California. I love going back to my roots and the ocean. I grew up in Laguna Beach. In the area, I would recommend Zinc Café (MAP IT, x) for a healthy bite.

CLOSET CHECK: My style is effortless and approachable. I usually wear PARTOW or vintage. I love finding hand-crafted pieces from traveling as well.

BEST HOME DÉCOR: I love architecture and furniture. Some of my favorite finds come from 1stDibs and Chairish. I would describe my interior style as minimal with statement pieces.

FOR HIM: A good bottle of wine from Eataly (MAP ITx).

BEAUTY BLACK BOOK: Paint Box (MAP ITBOOK ITxfor a good manicure!

FIT PICK: Mendez Boxing, of course! I train with Renée– he was in my corner at Madison Square Garden.

ULTIMATE NY MOMENT: I was walking home one night from work and I looked to my left and someone was trying to squeeze 50 balloons into the back seat of a cab— the moment has been captured on our Instagram page. It was a proper NY moment. CP
