Sarah Perlis and Gabe Riley

Jewelry Designer

| Park Slope

Sarah Perlis and Gabe Riley clearly share a love for detail— their Park Slope home is riddled with energy crystals, candles and potted plants— so what better for the husband-and-wife duo to make their life’s work than the most cherished of treasures: jewelry? Known for her delicate, one-of-a-kind designs, Perlis has been making fine jewelry out of her Lower East Side studio for over a decade; Riley runs the business side. Custom rings— of the engagement and wedding variety— are the downtown line’s bread-and-butter, though, typically cast in 18-22 kt gold, its myriad of tiny studs, pinky rings and pendants are what first inspired us to take a second look. Her pieces feature diamonds, sapphires and opals (all of which Perlis hand selects) and are often sized on the daintier side, carrying with them a quiet nobility that seems to reflect the couple’s own tender-hearted nature. Speaking of which, we couldn’t help but think of the pair with a certain impending lovers holiday just around the corner… Here, they sit down with CITIPHILE to reveal their little black books on NYC, plus Perlis gives us her top picks for Valentine’s Day.

NEIGHBORHOOD STANDBY: S: Estela (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x)! The burrata with salsa verde and charred bread is salty, smoky, cheesy heaven.

COFFEE OR TEA: S: Tea! At Caffé Vita on Ludlow (MAP IT, x) because they understand what a strong cup of black tea with lots of milk should taste like (plus, their milk is organic).
G: Caffé Vita— they pour the perfect [caffeine] shot.

ALL-TIME FAVORITE RESTAURANT: S: Omen Azen on Thompson Street (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x). They have a dish called “The Omen,” a clean, hearty broth of homemade noodles and veggies, and it’s total perfection. I’ve loved it since I was 13.

COCKTAIL DE LA NUIT: S: I’m not really into cocktails, but I love a good sake. Particularly when it’s served in a traditional wooden box with salt flakes on the side. Omen knows how to do it!
G: An Old Fashioned from Gotham (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x). In Prospect Heights, I go to James (MAP IT, x) for an amazing creation called a St. Anne’s (Gin, St Germain, lemon and mint).

AFTER-WORK HAPPY HOUR: G: 61 Local in Cobble Hill (MAP IT, x) for a wide selection of local craft beers.

POWER LUNCH: S: I love showing people Essex Street Market (MAP IT, x). Everyone always loves it there and there’s such a wide selection of treats. We’ll usually pick up some goodies and come back to the studio to enjoy them.
G: Russ & Daughters (MAP IT, x) is right around the corner from our studio. Need I say more?

MUSIC PICK: S: Reggae and new age. I love any music that inspires joy and opens the heart— even better if I can sing along. Does going to kirtans count?
G: I am always the one putting old school hip hop on Spotify. That’s all I need.

BEST BRUNCH: S: Russ and Daughters Café on Orchard Street (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x)! Their smoked fish is honestly heaven.

BEST PEOPLE WATCHING: S: El Rey Café on Stanton Street (MAP IT, x)!
G: On the subway and along The High Line.

HEALTHY STAPLE: S: Dimes (MAP IT, x) for the quinoa bowl.
G: Dimes’ quinoa bowl!

GUILTY PLEASURE: S: The cacio e pepe pasta at I Sodi (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x).
G: A Reuben from Court Street Grocers (MAP IT, x). Now, I want one.

NY’S BEST-KEPT SECRET: S: Rona at Boubouki at Essex Street Market (MAP IT, x) is my #1! Her spinach pies and chickpea salads are the best there is.
G: Brooklyn Boulders (MAP IT, x)— climbing in the city!

FIRST THING I MISS WHEN I’M AWAY: S: The incredible range of options for exercise classes.
G: The energy.

DATE NIGHT STANDBY: S: Omen, again! It’s quiet, has incredible, soft lighting and a beautiful, serene environment with exceptional food. It can do no wrong.
G: Meadowsweet in Williamburg (MAP IT, BOOK IT, x). It’s the ambience.

DELIVERY GO-TO: S: Hmm, oddly we never get delivery at home. But on a cold day at work, we love ordering from Souen (MAP IT, x). Their macrobiotic ramen is amazing.
G: I am new to Caviar— what a game-changer.

TO ESCAPE AND UNWIND: S: Pratima Spa on Greene Street (MAP IT, x) for an ayurvedic massage or Soho Sanctuary (MAP IT, x).
G: Central and Prospect Parks— what a gift to have in this city.

CLOSET CHECK: S: I love feeling casual, yet feminine; flow-y dresses are my go-to. I love the dresses and sweaters at Reformation (MAP IT) and anything Ulla Johnson (MAP IT).
G: A combo of Patagonia (MAP IT), James Perse (MAP IT), Inhabit (MAP IT) sweaters and Supra sneakers.

ACCESSORIES PICK: S: I’m in the super lucky position to be making them for myself, but if I want a treat, I’m off to Love Adorned (MAP IT, x) for sure!

BEST HOME DÉCOR: S: White walls, lots of crystals and cozy places to sit. My home is truly my sanctuary and I treat it that way. Anything at ABC Carpet & Home (MAP IT, x) is welcome any day.
G: The Greenhouse Company in Brooklyn (MAP IT, x) is a go-to. Go to BDDW (MAP IT, x) to be amazed.

BEST HOST/HOSTESS GIFTS: S: Love Adorned or ABC Carpet & Home.
G: ABC Carpet & Home.

BEAUTY/GROOMING BLACK BOOK: S: Wes (x) and Roxie (x) at HairStory (MAP IT, x). They have totally transformed the experience of getting your hair done. It’s like going on a meditation retreat.
G: HairStory and that is coming from a country boy!

FIT PICK: S: I love one-on-one pilates or a barefoot dance class at Equinox (MAP IT, x). There’s also a true hidden gem called Stanton Street Yoga (MAP IT, x) that I adore. It’s run by Dhyana and Syama, two sisters who are total yoga angels. I love taking their classes.
G: SoulCycle (MAP IT, x) for its amped-up energy. And Equinox for their kick-ass trainers.

ULTIMATE NY MOMENT: S: During huge moments like 9/11, the blackout in 2003 and hurricane Sandy, I was incredibly touched and humbled to see and feel NYC turn into what felt like a small town. People were loving, patient and truly acted like one big community. It made me fall in love with my vibrant home even more.
G: I am always amazed at how New Yorkers can move so quickly throughout their day— head down, charging forward. Then in a blink of an eye, they are helping each other like it was the most normal thing in the world. I always tell people who are unfamiliar with our big, crazy city that it is one of the most friendly places I have ever lived. CP
